Creche vs mamans de jours for 5 year old (Nyon)

Hi there!

After many months of patience and perseverance, we'll be finally Switzerland-bound in a couple of weeks!

We plan to enroll little beetle (who is 5 years old) in the local school in Nyon, and are debating daycare options.

From your experience, would you recommend a community daycare (private or state-run) or a maman de jours? I'm trying to understand the advantages of one over the other.

Both of us will be working, with mister beetle also frequently travelling abroad for many weeks. So we need a good system in place that (between school and daycare) takes care of little beetle during:
- lunch hour
- after school hours till 6pm (mon-fri)
- during school holidays

Thanks in advance for your response!

cheers,
bn

At 5 years old and in school, would be too old for creche.

What Nyon has is UAPE, unite acceuil pour ecoliers, ie. a system that takes kids in daycare outside of school hours, which is what you are probably looking for. However, keep in mind this concept is fairly new to Nyon and as yet they have not fully integrated the mid-day meal into the system, the Wednesday afternoons, and not sure about school holidays either. I believe that after school care is now up and running at many establishments, but it will depend on which public school, ie. your location in Nyon, and if there is one. Also keep in mind, it is new and demand outweighs supply, so you will likely need to work hard to find a place. The maman du jour concept still is an option but often there is long waiting lists; there is a central registry to call and get your name on it. Keep in mind that they also take holidays so covering all school holidays may be difficult as well.

Re: Creche vs mamans de jours for 5 year old (Nyon)

Thanks runningdeer! Yes, UAPE is what I'm looking for - basically after school care, lunches and Wednesdays.

I looked up nyon.ch and their latest brochures, tariff calculator etc seems to take 5-day week into account, plus additional for lunches.

I'm getting the help of a relocation agent, and I'm not sure if I can set them the task of finding an apartment near a school/daycare that meets all these criteria

May I ask how one's situation (both parents working, spouse away travelling, new job, etc) basically pushes one up the wait list? I understand they do assign priority based on the family situation. Otherwise I'm in a fix with the husband away travelling, a new job to settle into, and no daycare for the little one.

I've also asked the education authorities for the list of schools (for CIN 1,2) in Nyon, so I can at least plot out the schools on a map and see how close any prospective apartment is to the school.

It's such an uphill task!

Actually, what you need is called accueil parascolaire, and the centre of registration (same building as creche care, 4th fl Rue de Merchandise 17) will help you with this. Search this site for info, there are tel numbers. In the middle of the site, there are all the pdfs you need to enroll your kiddo.

You have to enroll your little one in the school first, then look for the nearest parascolaire (it also gets called creche informally as well, since it is the same or similar system, but for kids 4-6yr old, sometimes older, if school does not provide the after school care - parascolaire, they sometimes outsource - I found ours a 4/6yr creche right next to school she will go to). The nearest parascolaire can fetch your child after school, feed it and keep it till 6-7pm. Parascolaires function even during school hols, they start a few weeks in the summer before school starts, just having 3wks off themselves, otherwise they work through summer and other holidays. All the extras are of course paid extra, the fees are enormous but you can bump up the waiting list if both of you work, and both of you work in Nyon, or full time, etc.

It's getting late though, the enrollments were finalized at the end of June, do not leave it to the agent and call them yourself. If you are too late, then you will have to get a maman du jour, and I would always opt for parascolaire care instead.

Don't stress about having a flat nearby, since it is pretty rare to be able to actually choose a place to live in Nyon, as long as there is one available, take it.

Just logged in to respond - and Music Chick has basically said everything that I was going to!

I second the lot, especially that you need to make those phone calls as quickly as possible. The parascolaire system here is much better than in many other Swiss towns, and they try to help as many families as they can, but as MC said, places were allocated much earlier in the year. I know that demand outstrips provision, especially for full-time places.

The way it worked for us was that first we found a place to live (no mean feat in Nyon...), then we were allocated a spot at the nearest school. We then applied for a place at parascolaire once we had a place at the school...

The parascolaire system is designed for families where both parents work, so I'm not sure your particular situation would bump you up the list at all. Do you have any family members who could come over to help out for the first few months? Or maybe one of you could delay the start-date at your new job until the childcare situation is resolved?

I don't know how fluent your child is in French. Maybe you could start him/her off in an international school for a year or two, and then ease them into the local system when they're a bit older. Many of the international schools have timetables that are more amenable to families where both parents work!

Thanks Rowan. Well in our case we both work (plus my husband has to travel frequently on work). Hopefully that'll make a good case in our favour. Don't have anyone to help out for now - its just us three for now.

I'm actually pretty keen on our son starting in the local school straight off, to help him integrate better. I've heard it is tough to switch from international to local.

Thanks for the link MusicChick. I did write to them, they said I should contact them after we have an address in Nyon.
