Do kids bike to school in Switzerland?

Hello!
Do kids bike to school in Switzerland (Lausanne)?
Can they?

We've lived in Michigan, in Quebec, in Vancouver, in Auckland and in Christchurch. Many kids went to school on their bikes.

How do they dress in public school? Three piece suit or short and t-shirt?

Thanks

Re: Do kids bike to school in Switzerland?

Lausanne is very hilly... though I don't live there myself, I can imagine that biking to school might be tough. From what I have seen, children (even young ones, anything from age 7 upwards) tend to go to school by bus (normal town buses, not dedicated school buses), often without any accompanying adults.

There are no uniforms in public schools here - trainers, shorts/jeans and T-shirts seem to be the norm.

Re: Do kids bike to school in Switzerland?

I live near three public schools in Lausanne. I don't see any of the kids riding bikes, but I do see a lot of Razor-type scooters, (more in the elementary and middle school grades, not so much the older kids).

As was just said, the kids take the public buses. The buses are PACKED at lunch time when all the kids go home for lunch.

The dress code is very casual, just like you would see in America or Canada.

Re: Do kids bike to school in Switzerland?

Not know about Lausanne but in my village in Baselland the kids either walk to school or go on scooters. They aren't allowed to go on scooters until 3. Klass though so have to walk before that. I believe they are allowed to cycle if they live a certain distance away. My son (5. Klass) only goes on his bike when they are specifically told to (e.g. for going swimming or on day trips etc). They all get cubby-holes inside the school to keep their scooters in too.

As for clothes, ours just wear jeans/shorts and t-shirts.

I live in the country and kids bike, skateboard, walk or (push) scooter to school.

Re: Do kids bike to school in Switzerland?

Lausanne is indeed very hilly, so biking is somewhat difficult. Plus it's forbidden to bike on the sidewalk, so you must be really sure that your child masters the road rules!

But scooters are the norm here, 99% of kids have one!

Re: Do kids bike to school in Switzerland?

Thank you for all the replies.
Hills are no problem between St-Sulpice and the school in Chavannes-près-Rennes. But we've pretty much decided that my son will take the bus.

I often ride my bike on the sidewalk and I did not know it was illegal! That would explain the dirty looks...

I am happy to hear that kids dress casual at the public schools.

Cheers!
