Hi all,

Does anyone know a good hand surgeon in Zurich to suggest? I am about to have a hand surgery on my wrists and I am looking for recommendations on surgeons and hospitals.

I will appreciate any help!

I went to see a hand surgeon on Seestrasse, who speaks good English. I didn't actually end up having surgery as a Cortisone injection seems to have rectified the problem.

i recently was told that there are two very good ones in the Zug hospital and anothe i n Lucerne. He said they were the better ones.

What do you need done? Bone set? Carpel tunnel?

I went to Dr. Christian Hort, Rundum zentrum Husmatt 1, Baden to get a plate and 6 scews in the main bone of my right thumb (broken in 4 pieces at the time).

The operation and everything went well, but I subsequently established that he'd set my thumb like a finger, i.e. straight, and not curved around and in, as a thumb should be. Now I don't have the same dexterity that I used to have. Holding a pen and chopsticks is tricky.

I assume he did as much as he could considering the complexity of the break

His procedure for the bone setting was to fully anaesthetize my arm using a torniquet (not comfortable!!) and injection via IV. To get the plate out he used a series of local injections (well done and almost painless).

I'll be starting a fellowship in the ortho department at Schultess. I can try to find out who they have there. My experience in the last three weeks in a couple of other swiss cities has been that surgical quality is variable here too... just like in the US, depends on who you see and what their training has been. If it's anything involving the bones in your hand, I would make sure it's someone who has done their basic training in orthopaedics and then did their fellowship in hand surgery.

Dr. Hort is a plastic surgeon, he is not a specialist in hand surgery.

So, I asked around a bit... it sounds like the Chefärtzte (head doctors) in the Hand department at Schultess are all good surgeons. I don't know how the insurance system works here yet, but from what I've seen so far, you would definitely get good care.

To get a good surgeon you need to have private insurance cover. Otherwise you will have one of the normal surgeons.

It's common for plastic surgeons to also specialise in hand surgery and vice versa since both involve treating areas with complex nerve endings.

That is not always correct. Some of the best surgeons work in the public hospitals & are fantastic at what they do. For the extremely rare operation I had to have last year the best surgeon with the experience required worked at Treimli in Zurich. I have also had great experiences at Balgrist with my basic insurance orthopeadic surgeon. My worst experience was under Private medical care.
