Little red blotchy bumps on skin?

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on this...

For the last few weeks I've been noticing little red bumps on my arms and hands. They don't itch, but they look inflamed. On the other hand, my skin has been feeling generally 'itchy'.

Went to the pharmacy, they didn't have a clue.

Suspected the cat had fleas, went to the vets, they said it was unlikely as she doesn't go outside (the cat that is), and gave me a comb to test for fleas: no fleas.

So, before I make a doctor's appointment and (possibly) get laughed at for going in with something really common...

Anyone have any ideas?

(I'm a bit stumped as I don't normally get bitten by insects and, despite teaching for 6 years, I've never had headlice, so I'm not experienced in this area...)

Sorry for the poor quality of the photo... only have a camera phone at the moment.

Re: Little red blotchy bumps on skin?

Could it be "Hives" or "Urticaria"?

Re: Little red blotchy bumps on skin?

if tey were tiny really red spots that do not itch I say it is petechia which means there is something wrong with clotting but that picture shows really a type of allergic reaction, urticaria is very itchy. Have you been recently exposed to chemicals or something? dogs? cats? diffferent food? changed detergents?

How about a reaction to bites from mites? eg: dust mites?

Re: Little red blotchy bumps on skin?

If it is really itchy, could be contact allergy reaction. I had it a few times despite not being allergic to anything, to a cream that didn't gel with me.

There is also something called id reaction, which is an allergy reaction to a thrush or other yeast/fungi infection, sometimes people have athlete's foot without knowing it, no symptoms, check your shoes, understandable in this warm weather. Ids are sensitive little bumps, sometimes on sides of fingers, sometimes on arms, chest. The arms ones are more red and hurt, the finger ones usually colorless. Not necesarily itchy, though.

Re: Little red blotchy bumps on skin?

I was once prescribed a really great cream here called "Triderm" that is used for skin infections and allergic reactions.

http://www.drugs.com/mtm/triderm.html

I was prescribed it for (what I think was) a really itchy case of psoriasis behind my knees, and it cleared it up really quickly.

If you go back to your doctor, I would ask him/her about it. Or maybe ask a pharmacist. My doctor even told me that she always keeps a tube of it in her house because it works so well for so many things related to the skin.

If you are too embarrassed to go to the doctor, then maybe ask your local pharmacist. I have always found them to be very knowledgeable and helpful.

Re: Little red blotchy bumps on skin?

I can tell you it's not scabies. Scabies create gross itchy patches on your elbows and tiny, raised tracks under your skin and they itch like the dickens.

The bite in your picture looks like a spider bite. Do you have bed bugs, maybe?

get a shower filter mailed to you from ebay or amazon. they filter out the limestone and hard water. you skin will be 1000% times softer and the limestone could be the irritant. also no more crazy swiss hair.

Spider's bites? I'm serious there, we have a tiny species of spiders in CH which bites and leaves marks like this. Do you see two tiny holes at the centre of the spot?

It's not dangerous at all if it's spiders by the way.

We had this thread a couple of years ago about biting spiders.

Re: Little red blotchy bumps on skin?

Thanks everyone... although I have to say I had the hardest time getting to sleep after reading your replies... kept on imagining little beasties crawling all over me!

Blotches had to be put on hold due to a more major medical problem that ended up with a trip to A&E...

But have now booked an appointment with my doctor as the general consensus seems to be that it could be... lots of things .

I also thought as several people have said bed bugs (which I hate to say does seem likely as I had a hospital stay earlier this year and took my own pillow with me), that it might be a good idea to get an official diagnosis as I would imagine if it is bed bugs I'd need to inform the gerance...

Worryingly, have spent the last few nights at my parents (due to aforementioned medical issue) and haven't had any more bites.

ARGH!

Don't waste your money. While hard water is linked to dermatitis, due to drying of the skin, the cause is insufficient rinsing. In any case, a good moisturiser should overcome any effects of water (funnily enough) causing dry skin.

I get little red blotches on my fingers that are sometimes itchy. Invariably it goes away when I use a simple moituriser, like Neutrogena Norwegian Formula. Doctor said it was basically exczema. Don't be embarrassed about taking anything to your doctor. If he/she's any good, he'll treat it seriously, even if it's nonsense.
