I need to get some shots for an upcoming trip to Egypt. Does anyone know where to get the vaccines in Bern? Does basic health insurance cover the cost? If not, how much do you think it would cost for Hep B and Hep A?

Go to your doctor. You pay the health insurance for the jab. Tetanus booster? Cholera, Polio booster, MMR booster?

I already have the first of the 3 shots. I need to get the second one soon. We go at the end of December.

You want to get "Twinrix" which is a combo Hep A and B protection. It is a three stage shot but you are covered by the second shot (from memory). The third one is for the long term coverage.

You can get the shot at all of the normal travel clinics (use the search function to find the ones that have been covered in previous treads).

The recommended standard primary course of vaccination with Twinrix consists of three doses. The first dose is administered at the elected date, the second one month later and the third dose six months after the first dose (0, 1, 6 month schedule).

In exceptional circumstances, a rapid schedule of three injections given at 0, 7 and 21 days may be an option when travel is anticipated within one month or more after initiating the vaccination course and where insufficient time is available for the standard schedule. When the rapid schedule is applied, a fourth dose is recommended 12 months after the first dose.2

There's a travel clinic at the Inselspital in Bern. You'd need to call and make an appointment. Friends have had shots there.

I had various shots for a trip to SE Asia at City Notfall, the walk-in clinic near the train station. I don't remember now exactly which shots I had but I paid somewhere between 100 and 200 francs. I didn't find out whether my health insurance would pay for it because I was nowhere near exceeding my franchise anyway. If all you need is the hepatitis shots that is probably the easiest option (if you don't have a regular doctor in Bern already).

Thank you all. This has been most helpful. I wish my doc in AZ told me about the Twinrix since it would have saved me some money and time!

Don't worry about vaccines too much for Egypt. My husband is from there, we go all the time and it really isn't dangerous at all.

You just need the basic vaccines (hepatitis, tetanos, polio). You don't need malaria pills.
