We didn't have anyone at home for the first 2 weeks - then FIL and BIL came to stay and the week after my parents. I struggled with BF so was glad not to have someone there the first two weeks. Even when I switched to expressing I didn't feel comfortable doing it in front of people so had to take myself to my room every few hours.
I did not expect to be as tired as I was, and it took a lot of energy to do anything - so def not up to entertaining - esp as I had to fit in expressing as well. However, it was wonderful to be able to leave the baby with some people so that I could get out alone, even for an hour. Having someone to take care of the cooking and cleaning during the first weeks would have been great but we survived without.

Both sets of parents came within 3 hours of birth.
Everybody forgot me, they were all there for the wee one
I forgot my feelings about all the visitors.. twas too long ago.

As a maternity nurse, I can only say that getting all the help you can is fantastic, as well as having somebody to manage the visitors is great. It's good to let friends and family know beforehand you'd invite them when all is good, not too many at the time and also have them visit for as long or short you and the baby feel comfortable. It's nice to have somebody say that you need your rest and they could come back another day, that way you can focus on the baby, which for sure will keep you busy and have all the rest you need.
