I have an anxious new mum coming to stay for a week. She has asked that I find out what she is supposed to do/ where to go , if her baby suddenly needs a doctor during this time. ie: is it okay to go straight to a hospital? If so, would that be directly to the Childrens hospital? Or? Can one just walk into a doctors clinic? If so, can anyone recommend one near the Brausebad area.

Hi, we moved over here a month ago before we had organised any medical insurance for our little girl who was then 3 months old. We were concerned one day that she was not well so after some initial phone calls (it was out of hours and a weekend) we found out that we should simply take her to the new children's hospital.

There they asked us about insurance and we explained that we didn't have any yet and they asked us to complete a form when we done (she was ok, just a bit of bad colic) and then we made a payment from our credit card, which we then got refunded when we took out the insurance.

They were very helpful at the children's hospital so I would definitely recommend going straight there if any issues (which of course I hope you don't need to!).

Our little one just came home 2 days ago, and the first scheduled appointment isn't for four weeks so we asked a similar question. We were told that in case of urgent things, just go straight to the hospital, if less urgent, call a Paediatrician. I guess that if it is urgent, they'll look after the baby first and then do the paperwork afterwards. She should bring her papers with her regarding insurance or the EHIC if she is EU based...

I imagine that Childrens hospital is best, but the University Hospital has a Frauenklinik too if the baby is very new (they have neo-natal care I believe)

Thanks for that inforation. I will circle the childrens hospital on the map for her. Yes, she will be bringing all the appropriate insurance papers. She is actually a doctor, but becoming a Mummy seems to have introduced a whole new ball game of emotion and anxiety!! :-))

For nonurgent possibilities, I have found the name of a dr nearby in Austrasse, who was recommended in an old thread. Thank you both again for your replies.
