International or British schools

My husband was offered a job in Switzerland and the salary seems to be OK for the UK standard. But as my 3 kids go to UK school and I intend to keep them in english speaking school. May be my quiestion sound stupid but took a quick look on the Internet and the schools I randomly picked cost 25000GBP per year. OMG, even Sevenoaks (which is in G20) costs 18000 GBP...or any top private school in UK costs 30000GBP. But you cam find a good school in UK for 14000GBP. Am I looking in the wrong place? Or it is really SO expensive! Than I better stay where I am ...in UK

Yes, International schools are that expensive, most of them between 20.000 - 25.000 euro per year.

If you don't want them to go to local public school & you can't afford 20-25K times 3, then I can't see another option. There are no public English only schools in Switzerland.

Good luck.

Re: International or British schools

If you are concerned about a serious Education, then add variety, languages and experience. Send them to a local Swiss school.

PS

A Salary that is "OK" for a UK standard, may well be not enough to maintain the same standard of living here in Switzerland. add 40% to the "OK" UK salary, convert it to Francs and check this against your offer.

Re: International or British schools

Yup, you got your figures right, private schools are that expensive here.
English is only taught from 7th grade on in the public system (public school is free by the way).

Re: International or British schools

You should look around a bit and see what type of education you want.

As others said, an international school will run 20-30,000 chf per year.

However, a British curriculum school, one example here in Geneva costs a fair bit less at 17-18,000 chf per year.

Perhaps a bilingual option could also work for you, often much less cost.

You did not mention age of children, but costs generally go up as they get closer to the degree. Looking around at english or bilingual schools could give your more options than an international school.

Thanks a lot for thje reply!
The kids are 4,9,10.
Sorry, what do you mean bilingual schools-are they english-german? Are they less expensive.
No, of course, I am not against languages-my kids are bilingual already. I just can not imagine how my older child who is in Year6 would feel if I drop him straight away into Swiss public school, when he will not continue with learning as it is...but will start with learning new language.

Re: International or British schools

Maybe a stupid question but what about negotiating with the company who has offered the job? Does it not include any school-fees? The company I work for (and several other multi-nationals here that I know of) include international school fees in their relocation package for anyone relocating with kids already in school. It’s worth asking / negotiating anyway. And yes, it really is that expensive, here in Basel there’s not that much difference between English speaking and bilingual (or private German speaking schools for that matter) - at least all private schools I know of are in the 20 to 25K range.

Your kids are definitely still young enough to go into the Swiss public school system. There are many experiences as such recounted on this site and I know people personally who've been through exactly the same process. Yes, it would be tough at first, but you'd be surprised how quickly they catch up.

Re: International or British schools

I don't know which area you are thinking of moving to, but I'm sorry to tell you that international schools in the Zürich area are likely to cost more than CHF30,000 and priority is given to employees of companies who "support" them. There are a couple of bilingual schools in my neighbourhood, but again both have prohibitive costs. Private schooling here is very expensive, be it Swiss schooling or international. My youngest child is in a private Swiss school and it costs just shy of CHF 35,000 pa.

If your children went into the Swiss system they would be provided with German lessons, but I can't imagine that it would be an easy transition.

I would agree with a previous poster and talk to your husband's potential employer. Alternatively, although not an attractive solution for me, would be to consider UK boarding school. I do know that there is a State boarding school in Kent where the fees are actually pretty reasonable as the education is provided by the State and parents only pay for the board. However, this may not be something you would consider.
