It is good for children to be exposed to 'dangerous' daily items from a young age and learn how to use them, with supervision. None of my kids have their own knife, well, my oldest who is 14 does, but I allow my 8-10 year olds to use them on school trips and during our cook outs at home, as long as one of us parents is present.
