Fixed that for you and dodgyken. You're welcome.

ER staff will never fault you for coming in.
Your will fault yourself for years to come if you should have gone but didn't.

Now this could have all been avoided had you just gone out drinking! It's your own fault mate.

While I'm normally inclined to the "tough guy" approach myself (it's somehow fitting that the diagram creator couldn't spell "you're" properly... just sayin'), and I'm far too late to do the OP any good, I'll relate a little story that suggests it might not be the best approach.

I chopped a thumb while trying to do some vegetables at a friend's place in America 10 years ago. Pretty girl walked by the window, I looked up, and it was all over. I figured it wasn't that bad despite the depth and flow, cleaned up and bandaged it, threw out that particular carrot and finished cooking.

I slept on a spare mattress that night, and by morning, the mattress had a blood spot with a 3 or 4 inch diameter. It obviously wasn't fatal, but I started thinking by that point maybe I should visit a doc. I went in, explained what happened, and they told me they don't stitch after 12 hours but that they'd take a look at it.

5 minutes later, they decided to stitch despite policy. ;-)

It's not likely to kill you, I guess, but some things really do heal faster after a trip to the doc. You've got insurance, so go ahead and use it.

Re: Should I go to ER/Casualty?

It is now over 12 hours - and here is the update:

The wound did weep blood over night - but not a huge amount. And both edges are aligned - although curved inwards (as would be expected).

I went to the pharmacy to get stripes this morning - showed her the damage, she asked how deep it was - she then suggested I to MEDIX at Stauffacher to get it stitched.

The older members of the team are split 50/50 between getting it stitched or not.

My Granddad would have stitched it himself had he had the same injury!

I wonder if you can still get it stitched after 12 hours, I thought they didn't do that because of the infection risk....

Hopefully ER shot him up with some really nice stuff, rolled him in for three hours of intricate surgery and now he is in intensive care with some even nicer stuff on a drip and will wake up to a covey of beautiful giggly nurses, enjoying all the benefits of his Krankenkasse.

...now if somebody could stamp him a medal with "I am a sofa bed survivor" inscribed on it, everything will turn out in the pink.

Re: Should I go to ER/Casualty?

Following advice from the pharmacist I went off to see Dr Efstatios Pollakis at Bellevue. A great guy who speaks perfect english and provides all the information for going through the accident insurance.

Anyway, after 12 hours it was past their 6 hour cut off for stitches. He checked for nerve damage and said I was lucky for it not to be worse considering the type of injury! I got a clean up and re-bandaging - anti-biotics (so no drinking at the Viadukt this evening chaps) - and an appointment for tomorrow to double check there is no infection.

My hopes were raised when the attractive nurse asked me to take my shirt off. Turns out she only wanted to give me a tetanus shot
