Does attendance directly affect grades in Swiss schools?

Just curious... I was wondering if in the Swiss school system the number of absences from school directly affects grades, i.e. if a student misses a certain number of classes (even if for justified reasons, such as health problems), will that automatically bring his/her grades down? Or if performance is good in spite of the number of absences his/her grades won't be affected?

Thanks

Depends, but as far as I know, it is logged in and watched. If there is a certif at the end of studies, to my knowledge, the pc system will not allow certif if absence is higher than certain number. Absences to my knowledge have catch up system, if a child is absent they can do make up tests.

In my experience, it depends on the teacher. I was flunked out of gym class (yeah, I know, whatever) for not having attended enough classes despite a doctor's certificate.

I imagine it does, and they are not very understanding when it comes to outside circumstances that affect children and their performance/attendance etc. A sad fact.

Re: Does attendance directly affect grades in Swiss schools?

They are extremely strict here in CH with regards to taking time off school, and taking family holidays during school time is a total NO here. I am not sure, but I suppose it does not directly affect grades- although if absences ar too significant they will request that a child repeats the year. As a teacher I can certainly say, that here or anywhere, regular or lengthy periods of absence will affect the grades significantly. In the UK I had children going off on family holidays in their GCSE year- so unfair on the kids.

If absences are due to illness, then I imagine they will get the child to repeat the year, as s/he will not be able to cope with the next year's work. That is not a 'punishment' but to give the child a chance to catch up and succed.

Re: Does attendance directly affect grades in Swiss schools?

I just asked in the prof team, and in primaire and secondaire, it depends on how the student applies her-him self and how tolerant the prof is (every director also has rules concerning absences, and as Odile said, it is not very tolerated). There are cours de ratrapage, make up tests, etc., so in case of family affairs, medical certif, there are ways to push up the performance, it is actually very well thought of. If it is in the high school, though, and kids should have a certif at the end, the pc system might not allow it due to limits on absences at some vocational schools. If the kid is often ill, usually a class rep is offered. But there is actually no direct corelation of academic performance and absenteism, as they call it here. If the prof, though, has an opinion of the student trying to avoid school, the work can be graded stricter, and he-she can be less tolerant when accepting make up tests, etc. But that's just my area.

Re: Does attendance directly affect grades in Swiss schools?

In Basel, I don't think absences directly affect grades as long as they are excused and the work is made up. I don't know if there is an upper limit. The report card does list unexcused absences and lateness, at least for middle school and above. For applications to apprenticeships you are supposed to included these reports, so lots of school absences could look bad to potential employers. Otherwise I don't know.
