Probably nothing - but yes, check that Thyroid. it happened to me and I ignored it and couldn't understand why I just couldn't lose weight (despite being very active and trying to eat well), I wish I had tested earlier.

Re: Sudden weight gain

is this serious? 1kg in 3 days?

Weight gain has to be sustained over a longer period to be considered a weight gain!

The body weight fluctuates through out the day anyway so you can't just take two random points in three days and assume a sudden weight gain!

Was it Hypo or Hyper? And did the medicines help - because I have heard some not so nice stories.

Hypo - they told me once I start on thyroid hormone replacement the weight would just drop off, as I was seriously under. Levels back to normal, but ...

My weight fluctuates up to 3kg during the day.
Is it possible that weight vary that much during a day? I myself have tested that it varies within 600/700 gm after food intake or in a day without exercise, but 3 kgs??

Yes, it would be quite easy. Consider that, for example, I might drink 4 large beers before needing a toilet visit - that's 2kg just in itself. A large meal might be another kg, and in reverse (as previously mentioned) a toilet visit may be able to get rid of a similar amount in one go, particularly for the larger proportioned person.

Also not drinking enough water causes water retention. Drink 3 litres in a day, pee a lot, wake up the next day and most people will be down a kilo.

As for a pregnancy test kit, weight gain isnt one of the signs in early pregnancy unless she has been silly enough to miss her period for the past 2-3 months and didnt realise it.
If she dint realize that then it probably explains how she got pregnant in the first place

Back on topic
Depending on your weight and height, variation from morning to evening in your weight is pretty normal. be worried if there is a continuous trend.

I had once put on 8 kilos in four weeks, cause was because I was just hogging and not keeping tab on exercising.

The biggest challenge for most is not putting on weight, it is to loose weight....

I have not yet managed to loose those 8 kilos over the last decade or so.
On the brighter side, I at least managed to ensure I was stable in my weight

Indeed, bladder capacity and endurance certainly plays a role. But seriously, another good measure is if clothing suddenly feels tighter. When I was younger, at a certain time of the month I could put on 2kg in a day or so. Most unpleasant.

Thanks for all the replies

She is just very excited because, well, its kind of an achivement to go over 50kgs! I will tell her to keep an eye on it and if she continues in a month or so to go to the doctor. That and changing the batteries just in case

Re: Sudden weight gain

That's what a mom at my daughter's school said when I asked her if she works out or something since she's not just thin, but buff, as in muscles in her arm kind of buff. I'm thinking, I've got good genes, too, but mine didn't give me a body that makes me look like I work out. She claims vacuuming but, I'm a bit dubious. If she needs a few extra pounds, I'd be happy to share, free of charge.

Re: Sudden weight gain

Hmmm...looks like your friend is watching the scale little too much, a kilo here or there is really irrelelant (as it has been said, water retention, salt, maybe a few days worth of diet heavier than usually, or more sedantery schedule over 3 days, hormonal build up prior period, etc...). I know the battle with "let's push a few more hundred grams over 50kg, ugh", just lost 4kilos in 2 weeks due to fevers and worries, and it's crap. But I would only worry about 3-4 kilos within a few days, and if they stay (and only your friend does not want to put a bit more curve on her, only then)..
