Sudden weight gain

Ok helpful forum people. My friend has been very tall and very skinny her whole life. Its natural and she is very healthy, just a bit underweight. She never had problems with that and never been on a diet.

On the last few days though, she started gaining weight. We are talking about 1kg in the last 3 days. She hasn’t done anything different. No idea if this gain will continue although she certainly hopes so! She feels the same as always. Perfectly fine.

So my question is: Do I buy her new scales or a pregnancy test? :P

You change your font and buy her a visit to a doctor for a checkup

A laxative??

No kidding - not having a good "sit down" can easily add a kilo!

Also not drinking enough water causes water retention. Drink 3 litres in a day, pee a lot, wake up the next day and most people will be down a kilo.

Re: Sudden weight gain

I would guess that most people fluctuate a kilo or two without making any particular effort towards weight gain / loss.

I don't check my weight more than about twice a year (I don't have scales at home) so wouldn't know if I was +/- 3 or 4 kilos over a few months.

I would say if she keeps gaining weight for no reason she should get checked out with the doctor. Sudden unexplained weight gain can be an indicator of some conditions such as thyroid problems.

Consider also hormonal changes and thyroid. A medical check up won't hurt... wait a minute, blood samples will...

Re: Sudden weight gain

Gata, sudden weight gain can occur due to a number of different reasons. Eventhough your friend is feeling well, I think if her weight gain continues at this rate, she needs to get herself checked out. Check out the link below and note the following:

"Weight gain can also be caused by organ enlargement, such as from an ovarian cyst, and obstruction of lymph fluid. The above conditions must be diagnosed by a qualified health care practitioner, especially since serious disease may not always be accompanied by overt symptoms."

Like me then. I don't weigh myself often, because it normaly stays roughly the same, I sometimes worry when I start to go underweight, but it usualy corrects itself after a few days, I think it's the same when I start to get a bit podgy.

Still, I've heard stories of sudden weight gain, give it a week and see if it still keeps coming on.

1 kilo is all she put on and you are worried? Or is that an example of the rate she is gaining at?

Re: Sudden weight gain

1kg? I can poo out 1kg

Disgusting banter aside, its nothing - its probably water/bloat. Reducing salt intake might help. Try changing the batteries in your...er... her weighing scales. My friend thought he put on 10kg after a holiday, was mortified and went into the biggest panic mode without calming down and logically thinking that its possible to put on 10kg within 2 weeks. It was just the batteries that needed changing.

As for a pregnancy test kit, weight gain isnt one of the signs in early pregnancy unless she has been silly enough to miss her period for the past 2-3 months and didnt realise it.

Re: Sudden weight gain

Suggest you leave it a week or so. If she has gained >3 or 4 kilos then definitely get it checked. Personally I can vary +-2 kg within a few days, especially depending on activity, food types etc. But it rarely does not correct itself and is stable over a week or longer.

How often does this friend weigh herself? 1kg is negligible, especially over 3 days. Weight changes over months is more significant.

Having said that, age is also a factor. Women have more trouble than men with weight gain as the years progress...unfortunate, but fact.

Come back to us when she has gained 4kg over 1 or 2 months...then it might be worth wasting our precious digital time

One KILO? Sheesh, did not know that there were bathroom scales on the market that did such low increments, normally I would stand on two scales and add the values.

I can see where this thread is going. .. once the claims of bathroom expenditures enter double digits in kg, I'm unsubscribing to this thread.

Some of mine look like they have come straight from a Canadian logging camp. When they hit the waterways they'll be a danger to boats!
