Hi I recently got married here in Switzerland. Im from the UK and my wife from Portugal.
And we got an 'international wedding certificate'.

My question is, is the 'international wedding certificate' accepted as is? In other words if I went to the UK and had to present the certificate, would that be accepted or would I have to get it converted to whatever?
Does anyone know if the same applies to Portugal?

I spoke to the consulate in Bern and they said there is no obligation to register the wedding in the UK but I can if I want. Can anyone advise what benefit this would bring if any?

No, I cannot think of any benefit.

I have an international marriage certificate issued in the Netherlands - it's been accepted in the US and Switzerland, no problem. A proper international certificate should be just fine.

Can you get the certificate reissued anytime you need to? Being issued in Switzerland i assume you must be able to??

I wish i had lodged my foreign issued marriage cert with the UK GRO so that I could have ordered a certified copy of it when I needed one to be dated in the last 6 months to register my daughters birth. As it was I had to go to the embassy of the country I married in to get it endorsed and the birth cert still took 7 weeks to process.

Other than that, the only benefit I could think of was that in future generations my descendants would be able to find my marriage cert whole researching their family tree :-)
(but again, Switzerland is not a difficult place to track paperwork down!)

I'm Australian so maybe its different but I was told if we registered the marriage for Australia it would make the process a bit quicker/easier if we want to get Australian residency for my partner.

International wedding certificates issued under the Convention on the issue of multilingual extracts from civil status records do not require translation or an Apostilles if used in another country that is a member of that convention.

It will be accepted in Portugal. BUT...

Please check if the International Certificate was filled up correctly. The reason I ask is, being Portuguese and delievering my International Certificate in Portugal, found out that the gorgeous people in the German office do not know how to fill up certificates according to the rules and wrote:

"Mother in law married surname" geb. "Mother in law single surname". Geb. meaning born as. Which shouldn't be there at all. I had to pay an official German translator to translate the "geb." for 40 euros. Yuuhuuuu.

My international wedding certificate was not accepted by the French authorities (so my marriage has never been registered in France - who cares).

Some details as to why it was not accepted, whilst it being termed
"International" should be informative.

I was married here in CH also and received the international certificate. It was absolutely fine for using in the UK when I had to renew and change the name on my passport. I also used it to change to my married name on a UK bank account.
