Sleep clinics in Zurich?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anybody knows if there is a sleep clinic in Zurich? I suffer from really violent nightmares every night. I have suffered from these nightmares for as long as I can remember.

I have had some tests done already in Ireland but I was being passed from pillar to post and getting nowhere. I am exhausted all the time and hate the thought of going to sleep. I would love to get to the bottom of this.

Any advice would really be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Carmen

Re: Sleep clinics in Zurich?

have you been in a sleep clinic and video for the night with monitors? Is it not conclusive?

Re: Sleep clinics in Zurich?

Yep, I was hooked up to every machine imaginable and was monitored by video. The result was 'non specific brain activity'. But nobody could explain exactly what that meant. I was told that my nightmares started before I was even fully asleep and continued throughout REM sleep.

I have had EEG's and CAT scans and an MRI. I was checked for a special kind of night time epilepsy. I was monitored for a week but that result was negative. I was also tested for sleep apnea, but I don't suffer from that. I went for hypnotherapy which was good but it was working out very expensive.

There's a sleep 'laboratory' in Fluntern. You could contact them and see what they can do for you.

Good luck!

You should definitely try here, at the University Hospital in Zurich.

I would also see a good psychiatrist or a psychotherapist. Perhaps the problem is not physical.

I went to the ksm, but I was not that satisfied with them.

Then again, I went for a snoring problem.

Re: Sleep clinics in Zurich?

As already posted, the Hirslanden Clinic and the University of Zürich operate sleep clinics. If your nightmares are strictly due to not optimally functioning chemical brain activity alone, these clinics might help. Otherwise nightmares often have a psychological source - and this does not mean that there is anything wrong with you. Maybe something within you is trying to communicate something and is have trouble getting through.

Re: Sleep clinics in Zurich?

Thanks for all the replies I will check out The Hirslanden and see if they can help me.

I have seen a psychiatrist and a psychologist. The psychiatrist was a bit of a joke. He laughed and told me that I wasn't a danger to society and to go home. The psychologist was helping me with different techniques to cope with the nightmares but I only saw her a few times as I was moving over to Zurich.

When I was in the sleep clinic in Ireland people kept coming into the room to see if I was okay. To see if I was hooked up to machines. To see the person who was in there previous to me. I was woken up so many times I was surprised that I got got any sleep at all. It was very badly organised.

But I would love to get to the bottom of this so I will contact the Hirslanden and see if they can help me.

I scare the life out of my boyfriend sometimes as I scream myself out of my nightmares. He has come in from a different room to wake me up when he hears me screaming. The dreams are always the same. I feel pain in my dreams which my brain is registering as real. Even when I wake up out of the dream I can still feel the pain that was in my dream.

So I really appreciate all the advice. I really hope that I can get to the bottom of this.

Thanks everyone.

Carmen

Hiya,
Yes I have tried many things. I have tried Nytol both herbal and the chemical one. I've taken valerian tablets from the chemist here too. But nothing seems to work.
What was the name of the drops that you tried?
I take Benocten to help me get to sleep. Otherwise I would lie awake all night.

Is it possible that it is real pain - something that manifests itself after you have been lying still for a period of time, maybe brought on by the pressure of lying on it?

Is the pain always in the same spot?

I guess you have been through all this with your specialists but that detail just stuck out when I was reading your story.

Re: Sleep clinics in Zurich?

No it's never in the same spot. It relates to the nightmare. The nightmares are always really violent. They always end in the same way with someone or something killing me. The dreams are never the same though. Sometimes the pain is so intense in the dream that I really don't think that I am going to wake up. The only way that I can wake up is to scream as loud as I can in my dream but unfortunately I am doing it in real life too.

People have said to me that if you know you are dreaming you will just wake up. But I don't. I know I am dreaming. Sometimes (very rarely) I can control the dreams and it is such a good feeling. But I can't wake up even when I know it's a dream.

But for example if I have my throat cut in my dream, that is where the pain is. If I have my insides ripped out in the dream that is where the pain is. So the pain relates to the dream.

Re: Sleep clinics in Zurich?

That sounds really horrible and I feel for you Nighttime is there to rest and recuperate, not to experience mortal fear and pain. I totally understand that you would rather not sleep if you're having those nightmares.

Unfortunately I do not have any advice, but I hope you will find an expert who can help you.

Re: Sleep clinics in Zurich?

Your name made me smile as it is completely in context with the problem here :-)

Yes you're right. I would love to wake up feeling refreshed after a good sleep, instead of waking up and feeling exhausted.

Thank you very much for your good wishes.

Re: Sleep clinics in Zurich?

May be you are possessed by a spirit? Have you ever consider seeing someone in regards to your dreams? A shrink may be? A friend of mine wakes up with blood on her pyjamas all the time, we thought it was the house as when she sleeps her bedroom turns icy but when she stayed at her boyfriend's place she still woke up with blood on her.

She lives in ireland, i'm from Dublin.

I hope you get to the bottom of it.

Good Luck
Dina

Re: Sleep clinics in Zurich?

@Odile Sorry if you are mad, it might be another option to consider. If she did tried all options and cannot find anything. It's just a thought, so no need to be upset. I was trying to help.
