Handicapped Guest

Hello all,

My father is coming to visit for a few weeks at the end of November. Both of his knees are very bad and is unable to walk long distances therefor i will be driving him and/or he will be driving my car throughout his stay. I was wondering if it is possible to get him a Handicap sticker/placard that he can use for his stay in Switzerland? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Handicapped Guest

I don't know the answer but maybe you could check with your Gemeinde as a first port of call for help on what to do or where to go if it's not something they cover?

Good luck and I wish your father a nice and pleasant stay.

As far as I know, you can not apply for a card here if he is not a resident, but if he has one from another EU country you might be able to use that one.

Check with the Strassenverkehrsamt in your canton, for ZH: www.stva.zh.ch/sobe as they are responsible for issuing the permits.

Re: Handicapped Guest

if he is a blue badge holderin the UK then he can bring it with him and use it here, be careful though as not all parking spaces are free for disabled badge holders but at least you can park nearer the shops etc

Re: Handicapped Guest

A one legg-ed friend of mine has been bringing his handicap badge from the U.S that hangs on the rearview mirror for years and years, though he only uses it when he really needs it (he walks OK most of the time) he's never had a problem when using it.

Re: Handicapped Guest

If you have one from the UK then, according to my sister (who has the disabled badge and is usually well informed on these things) you can use it throughout Europe, including Switzerland. She always brings hers when she comes and I use it in my car and never had a problem.

Re: Handicapped Guest

Thanks for the info everyone! He's from the US so I'll have him bring his blue hanging card and I think we'll approach the gemeinde and see what they have to say.
