child returning to UK

Morning all

Does anyone know if a teen that wants to return to UK to go to college or find work, has to have someone appointed as their legal guardian in the UK for them to be legally resident there? My sister and husband are happy to have my son live with them there, but for him to get his national insurance number, he has to be a UK resident, and I don't know if it is enough for him to just show his UK passport and give my sister's address as his fixed abode to get this. He does not want to be here anymore, and we can't all just up and move back to UK. Has anyone else here got older children who have returned to UK to finish their studies or find work? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Catherine

Re: child returning to UK

Passport or birth certificate and a UK address is fine. Always good to have a letter from the parents, and the guardian for any minors.
I was 17 when I left SA for the bright lights of Luton and landed unannounced on my Aunts doorstep...and look at me now. :-) :-(

Until he is 18 years old, wouldn't it be a good idea to give your sister the power of attorney over him?

What happens if he is arrested? Doesn't he need a legal guardian in UK? As a minor how can he apply for further education?

And don't forget to write to the Swiss authorities (See the last page of his 'C' permit) to obtain permission to leave Switzerland for 4 years of study in the UK. Then if he changes his mind within 4 years, he can come back here again, without difficulties.

If he got UK passport, then he should not have any problems. However, he might need to pay for his education since you have not reside in UK for the last few years. They are getting quite hot about "paying" fees for education now. So do check it out.

This is one of the things that concerns me. What if something happens? To be on the safe side, i guess he needs to have a legal guardian should some unforseen circumstance occur. From a "mother point of view" I feel as though I'm "giving him up " but that's my personal mum-son feelings. I guess I'll need to get in touch with a solicitor to arrange guardianship for him until he's at least 18 years old.
