English speaking Doctor in Allschwil / What to do when Pregnant

Hi

Myself and my husband have just found out that we are having a baby. Its great news.
We have rung Medgate to find out exactly what we need to do and they have told us to find a womans doctor in Allschwil. Could anyone advise us of any English speaking doctors in Allschwil and also any advice on what we need to do would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Re: English speaking Doctor in Allschwil / What to do when Pregnant

I think when the lady on the phone to me said 'a woman's doctor' I now believe she means a gynecologist. I have seen a few posts recommending a gyno doc but they all seem to be in Basel Stadt. Do I have to see a gyno in Allschwil or does it not matter?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Do I need to ring my insurance first? (I have already rung medgate) or can I just ring up a gyno and try and book an appointment? Not sure how it works!

You don't have to have a gynae in your area - my gynae is in BS and I live in BL since it's more convenient usually to go in work time. So if you find someone you like and it's OK for you then just ring up and make an appointment - tell them you are pregnant as most gynaes have a limited number of places for pregnant women (since over here you visit once a month when PG).

For the insurance - normally you'd just give the gynae your insurance details and they do the rest with forwarding bills/expenses (or if you are with Assura then you need to pay bills and claim back from the insurance).
I didn't inform my insurance company - I just sent off the bills I got and "informed" them that way! If you inform them then I imagine they will provide you with the standard list of what they will pay for during pregnancy. Not to worry though, pretty much everything is paid for by insurance when you are pregnant - all appointments, tests and checkups that the gynae recommends/prescribes anyway. The only thing not covered are regular pre-natal vitamins (if your gynae prescribes iron tablets then they will normally be covered) and more than 3 scans (unless your gynae says you are high risk or you need them for some "prescribed" reason.)

And do join the BCT - we have a booklet called "Having a baby in basel" which explains a lot of stuff about birth oprions and midwives and insurance etc.

Not quite right here, as far as I'm aware, some insurances will actually cover some brands of vitamins as long as your gynae prescribes them. Most things pregnancy related aren't included in the franchise but some complications of pregnancy are, so if you have a high franchise and you have complications you could end up having to pay it - nice 2500CHF surprise bill we got!

If you search the forum, there are lots of threads on what is and isn't covered by insurance and how to go about everything here.
