During an emergency hospital admission today, hubby was told that warfarin is not available in Switzerland. The hospital is taking the pragmatic view that he can dose himself while in hospital.

However has anyone moved from warfarin to marcoumar (which I am told is the Swiss anti-coagulant in use)? easy to do or lots of hassle? He has his own blood testing meter, so monitoring is pretty easy if the Swiss doctor will prescribe the test strips.

Warfarin was not easy to get in Luxembourg, but they would import it from France for hubby. With the EU/Swiss border, I guess that won't be an option here.

If needed, we can get the prescription done privately in UK. But not ideal.

Marcoumar is the standard treatment here, it is a more up to date drug than warfarin. However if your husband has to change drugs that may effect his INR so could be a good idea to get some Heparin injections until it is back in the correct range.

Warfarin is available in Germany (with a prescription, obviously), brand name is "Coumadin".

Thanks...would a Swiss doctor prescribe Coumadin to be filled at an Apotheke in Germany? Or do I send hubby to a German doctor for this?

Check with a cardiologist, they would definitely know.

Normally is you have a DVT you see a vascular surgeon or a hematologist depending on any complications you may have.

lol I bypassed all of those by having multiple PE's in both lungs only discovered by accident when I had a post chemo CT scan, you've never seen a CT doctor look quite so grey and paniced

So was referred straight to a hematologist.
