Samichlaus - When should my kids receive gifts?

Help! I've heard that Swiss kids get their gifts on the 5th or 6th brought by Samichlaus... Does that replace Santa Claus' arrival on the 25th? I need to make sure that I understand so that when my 5 year old gets to school on December 6th, she has received something in line with what the other kids will get. Does that repace Santa Claus' arrival? Or do kids here get both visits? Thank you!

Samichlaus doesn't bring gifts apart from a small bag of nuts, tangerines, lebkuchen and little chocolates. You'll see the hessian style bags in Coop and Migros for a franc or two.

The gifts are brought on Christmas Eve by the Christkindli.

As above, with a twist. To attempt to maintain British and Swiss traditions we do the following:

- 6th Dec.: Santa Clause brings his bag of nuts, mandarines, lebkuchen, breadman and possibly one small gift. He then knows who the children are and where they live (for future reference).

- 24th Dec.: after 4.00pm, when it starts getting dark, a downstairs window is left open, a bell tinkled and everyone goes upstairs (or in appt. another room) - and a parent delaying to double check everything. After a short wait everyone returns to find that the Christkindli has brought the main gift that the child wished for/mum and dad wanted the child to have.

- night 24/25th Dec.: Santa still comes down the chimney with more gifts (now he knows the children from the 6th) and others have wished the child to have - but for the children only. Grown ups can buy and give presents to each other, and also the child - this covers if the child sees one parent buying something for the other (some hope), or themselves giving a pressie to mum; and relatives bringing gifts at a later stage.

The Ebineezer in me says "Thank God the eldest is already beyond this" - just a few more years for the youngest.

Dear all. Thanks so much for the responses. I came across an old thread on EF with fantastic info on all things Christmas. I'm sure this will be of help.

This is an old post but with Christmas coming soon I found it interesting.
