Implications of sending a child overseas to study...

Hi,

We are considering sending our eldest to overseas to a boarding programme from age 12 - 15. I don't want to discuss the in's and out's of why or whether it's a good idea (that's a complex discussion).

Actually, we already have the support of the school psychologist for this option, and they have told us that they probably cannot make a strong recommendation for her for the local system, if we can opt out and do not have long term plans for her to stay in Switzerland...

But, I do want to get some advice/discussion of what the implications are for her residency, tax implications, health insurance coverage etc. Does the school system in Switzerland have an obligation to her...does she keep her residency even though she is living substantially in a third country, etc.

In our case, we are Australian, on B permits in Switzerland, and the school would be in the USA. If anyone has experience with having kids on student visas in the US, health insurance coverage etc, I'd love to hear from you. She has already had one experience flying unaccompanied as a 10 year old back from new york to Zurich, and it looks like Delta will be our best airline for the connection we need and they do unaccompanied transits whereas a lot of airlines will only allow children to be unaccompanied for direct flights...

Thanks
