| | Snot clearing machine!
Not even sure what it is called in English! When a baby has a cold and you need to clear the nose - you use a sort of sucking thing, a pipe with a small ball at the end.
Does anybody...
i) Know what the hell I'm talking about?
ii) Know if they can be purchased here (or will the pharmacy simply provide me with pixie tea - refer to a previous thread!)
iii) Know what they are called in the German speaking part?
Ta
(Also, any experiences to report using saline sprays on tiny noses would be welcome too)

You can get them at the pharmacy no problem. There's also another style that you suck on- I know it sounds gross!- but there's a filter so nothing comes through to you. Supposedly.

I don't know if this is the correct name, but try Ballonspritze.
When I asked at the Apotheke for a Ballonspritze, and described what I needed to do, I was given the object you describe...
Hope the little one is feeling better soon.

You could try also nasenpümpchen, or the French term mouche bebe (moosh behbeh), they'll understand. There are electric ones too .

I can't imagine she'll object to that
Thanks all

Looking up photos on the internet, it appears what you're looking to ask after is an "Elektrischer Nasenaspirator" or "Elektrischer Nasensauger"
Here is one I found at Baby Markt - I've been inside one of their stores in Germany, it's quite nice, with very helpful sales associates. Reading the description, it appears it is battery operated, using some of the small flat batteries, like you'd use in a watch. |

Why oh why as a practical woman did I find this type of care so stomach churning. Me, the cotton buds and the baby, I retched every time!

You can buy the ones you suck on at the Migros in the baby section, brand is Rotho.
these ones are nice as they are transparent and you can see what you suck out and whether you are being effective the one they tried to sell me at the pharmacy was not transparent and therefore a bit pointless
I spray the saline solution from Nivea first, then suck out.
It has filter plus really long hose so it really will never come even anywhere near your mouth (having said that, hubby refuses as the thought makes him sick... )
The ones which are manual and with a little pump attached were useless for me.
I would not spend much as you will use it for little time only... As soon as baby is strong enough they will fight this and it is dangerous to continue using.
Cheers,
K

The manual ones are much less expensive, they are what I remember my mother having in the house when we were kids. Caviarchips asked after an electric one though and all of those appear to cost a bit.

OK, so the ball ones don't always work, there is not enough sucking power, to my and my friends experiences. Get the one you suck on yourself (a cable to your mouth, hose, kinda, you suck it out yourself, you will need to do it only once as opposed to the dreaded ball ones).
Saline sprays worked really really well, you spray that before you suck. Don't get the "ampule" ones, get the spray since it scares the kiddo less and it is friendlier. The ones you squirt in yourself fill the nose too much and the crap drips onto the tonsils which babies hate. You don't need to have the baby super washed inside, like with neti pot or sumfin, you just need the nasal area gently washed, so the spray will work.
You can also get an ointment to put around the nostrils and inside, since quite often those are irritated and hurt, called Nasal Onguent "Ruedig" by Spirig. The nose crust is usually another reason babes cry, aside of not being able to respire well. Humidifier in the room works wonders as well.
Don't wait with the sucking action, since they quickly get it in their ears if nose does not get treated. It's an unpleasant thing to do, suck the crap out, both for parents and babes, but it diminishes the ear infection risk.

The ball does work, but you've got to very very delicately press the other nostril to create the suction.
I'd really ask the doctor though, because it can be a delicate procedure.
Though it doesn't seem like a medical procedure, it is one. A baby with an upper respiratory infection needs careful attention.
Onei's suggestion is really not to be followed under any circumstances, considering the size of an infant's lungs
(apologies Onei, you perhaps mean well, but it really is not a good idea)

I'm presuming that if the baby's skull starts to cave in, then too much suction has been applied ...

Maybe Onei's parents did it to him, which is why he believes that the world is run by bogeymen |

Lil Mud turned into an octopus when trying to drain her nose; with her the one with the tube you suck on was easiest as you didn't have to try to squeeze and release the bulb at the right time while maintaining contact with the nostril/closing the other/ holding her head still/ incapacitating arms and legs .

I am still scared to hang the laundry in the basement..But we do have a bogeyman in da house, though.
One thing about the sucking hose thing (I think I would be cautious using hte electric ones, just like I was cautious using electric breast pump, since it can suck too much and you need some time to figure and adjust the sucking action), I would up my dose of vits when sucking the snots out, since one still inhales the sick vapors.
