I read 20 mins and Blick. Blick is more for my own learning as I appreciate its a rag. I can read most of it though with my dodgy A2 Deutsch

I subscribe to:
K-Tipp
Ideales Heim
Wir Eltern

Beobacher I read occasionally and the local Zug newspapers I read every week. A colleague I share an office with reads Blick every day ..but that's German isn't it?

Re: What Swiss magazines/Newspapers do YOU buy or read?

For international news, the NZZ is by far the better newspaper than for example the tagesanzeiger. NZZ have about 40 journalists worldwide and interesting news reports from all over the world. It's heavy reading material though - small font, few illustrations/images but very good on the facts, statistics and having an independent critical opinion on events.

Tagesanzeiger is okay for every now and then, for news about the Zürich region, local stuff although the language really is quite politically-left coloured. Their Saturday magazine is not that good unfortunately, although they've been working to improve that for ages. Also what I like less is that the average Tagi weighs about one kilo, loads of ads and some sections with information value close to zero .

Blick is cheap empty-headed sensation press like fastfood , clearly aimed at teenagers .

Bilanz I subscribed to for half a year. Boring stuff, always wanting to be nice and anything but controversial. IMO they write too much about individual people (always the same heads, basically the bosses from the big Swiss SMI-listed companies) and too little providing valuable insights, thoughts, opinions or columns a la Times/Newsweek/IHT/Times/etc. They never dare to write about what's really hot in Switzerland. They recently interviewed Tommy Hilfiger -- were proud they finally managed to get an interview with him, were trying for 1.5 year. And the result ...well I fell asleep reading the interview. Besides if I wanted to know more about TH I would buy a fashion magazine, right? The magazine lost their compass if you ask me and are heading in same direction as the "Fakten"-magazine which went belly-up a year or so ago.
If you see the main editor of Bilanz and read his column on page 3 you'll see/read what I mean.

Re: What Swiss magazines/Newspapers do YOU buy or read?

I subscribe to the Berner Zeitung and the Sonntagszeitung. The BZ is the biggest best newspaper for the Kanton.

In the train I will read whatever is laying around 20min, NEWS, etc and I do look at several online news sites throughout the day (bernerzeitung.ch or 20min.ch, cnn) ... but no free paper or online news service could replace my joy in a morning coffee and a home delivered paper. Woo!

I read 20min & Blick am Abend mostly just to pass the time on the train. I also occasionally read the odd German photography magazine as well (title varies)

Does anyone read Swiss News or Inside Switzerland? Both are English publications concentrated on Switzerland. Inside Switzerland is more modern culture orientated and Swiss News more business orientated.

Re: What Swiss magazines/Newspapers do YOU buy or read?

I browse through 20 minutes (Fr and De versions) on the train in the morning, and Blick Am Abend on the way home. We occasionally pick up La Liberté (FR francophone paper) or Freiburger Nachrichten (FR German paper), or at least the online versions. Le Matin Dimanche is often worth a wade through on a lazy Sunday.

Yes, there is the magazine Edelweiss for the Suisse romande:
www.edelweissmag.ch

And the newspaper Le Matin-dimanche (if not the saturday edition) has a supplement magazine called Femina. www.lematin.ch,

and of course: www.lillustré.ch (the swiss-french pendant of "Schweizer Illustrierte"

Bonne lecture!

Re: What Swiss magazines/Newspapers do YOU buy or read?

Free newspapers in train (if I'm not tired enough and if I find one)
Annabelle - magazine for women (I love it )
TagesAnzeiger, Sonntagszeitung (whenever I feel like reading them, which happens very rarely )
These are all in german.

Re: What Swiss magazines/Newspapers do YOU buy or read?

Am quite surprised none of you have mentioned SWISSINFO.CH. It's a news portal - in NINE languages -, targeting foreigners living in Switzerland, in particular.

Have a look: www.swissinfo.ch - and find out more about Switzerland. Current Affairs, useful background info on politics, society, lifestyle, etc.

N.B. it's English editorial department is the largest - more staff than than the nationals in German, French and Italian.
