Where to get a mammography done?

Hi,

Was just wondering if anybody has had a mammography done and if so can recommend a really good place with trustworthy doctors. Haven't heard the nicest things about the Universitätspital. The doctors and students are apparently over worked and have at times given incorrect prescriptions. That may sound silly but it is enough of a mind block for me...I don't want to take ANY chances. The money doesn't really matter... my insurance scheme doesn't cover it so I don't have any specific list of doctors or places to go...

For what its worth I have a note from my gynae back home saying I need to get one. So I don't need to see one here.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Where to get a mammography done?

Do you have a GP here? If not I would get one, but the GP would know other places besides the hospital and if you have a referral from your overseas gyno already, I am sure a GP would help you getting a good address. By the way, are you sure you will not be covered? Assuming you have the Swiss insurance, maybe it is covered if it is necessary to have one more often than 5 years as you are saying in your case...

Re: Where to get a mammography done?

Hello May be no use to you as you are based in Zurich, however in Zug there is a drop in clinic where you can go along if you have any issues / worries etc. I rang up making enquiries and was asked if I wanted to come along there and then. Perhaps in Zurich there is a similar clinic?

Re: Where to get a mammography done?

I too would be greatful if someone would know of a good place for mammography in Zurich. My doctor (male) did not give me any recommendations when I asked. He said I don´t need one yet!

I disagree with him. I´ve been told that when you hit 40, you should have a mammogram every year? Yeah, sounds weird but breast cancer can be very aggressiv if it hits you when you´re young.

Arena, this doesn't respond to your question directly but I thought I would post the info anyway.

In Lausanne, there is a FANTASTIC place called Imagerie du Flon which specialises in mammos and ultra sounds www.imagerieduflon.ch.

Cheers

Re: Where to get a mammography done?

I've been having mine done at the Universitätspital for quite a few years now, and have always been impressed with the professionalism and quality of treatment.

My gyno gives me a referal letter, I can usually get an appointment right away, people at the Spital are polite and friendly, and the facilities are fine.

The doctor who has done my mamograms is a specialist; I've never been seen/treated by a student or junior doctor. She spends plenty of time discussing the results with me, answers my questions thoroughly, always seems to be well briefed on my previous exams, etc. She also follows through with my gyno - in short, I've been happy with the treatment I've had so far.

(In fact, I think I get better medical treatment here than I had at the ultra-fancy clinic I went to back in the States.)

ETA:

Riita, the 'standard' (I assume that means insurance coverage?) here is/was regular mamography after age 50; however if you are in a heightened risk group, you certainly can ask to have them done at any time. If your doctor is not sympathetic to your concerns, change doctors!

I had one to the Universitätspital and everybody there was really good and helpful.
I was referred there by my GP. Just ask him/her what your options are

Ditto what they said. I was seen by one of the doctors who teaches at the Universitätspital on the day that he sees his private patients. Then had the mammogram at a time they set up. Actually I had a brain-lapse and showed up one day early and they were able to take me anway, with just a short wait, so that my husband didn't have to take off again the next day to watch our daughter. You get your results interpreted right away which is nice too - coming from the US I was used to having to wait for the radiographer to read the results, communicate them to my referring doc, who then told me 7-10 days later.

Re: Where to get a mammography done?

Hey muze7
Thanks but I actually am fairly young...so I don't really need to keep going. My gyno found a lump which she doesnt think is serious but wants me to check it out and know for sure. My insurance is for chf2500 n over which this certanly won't cost that much.
I will find a gp.. never needed one so far - touchwood!

Re: Where to get a mammography done?

Thank you all for your replies. I think I will ask a GP and if he too recommends the Universitatspital then I will just go there. Everyone here as far as the mammography is concerned seems happy with it so I'm gonna give it a shot with a positive attitude.

Thanks again.

Re: Where to get a mammography done?

Has anyone had one at the inselspital in Bern? Any other experiences in Bern?

Having worked for an academic hospital in the US, I would have one done somewhere they do a lot of them, which is usually an academic hospital.

I'm glad to hear that they do a good job in Zuerich. And, also that they read them right there. It just alleviates so much stress. It's one of the first things I ask when I make an appointment.

Since I'm in a high risk group (family history) and in that age group - my insurance covers the procedure - not that I care - I'd pay out of pocket.

Thanks!
e.

Re: Where to get a mammography done?

For the record, I found what what basic insurance should cover:

Quote:
Preventative mammograms for women over 50 (every 2 years; yearly for women whose mother, daughter or sister has had breast cancer)
source Comparis

Now I would think the second sentence also applies if the person herself is involved...but this needs verification.

Check out this place:
http://www.mri-roentgen.ch/site/kontakt/index.php

My doctor sent me here - it's absolutely centrally located, just across from Hauptbahnhof in Zurich. Very modern, very friendly, quick in/quick out.
I had asked my doctor about having mammography when I was in my mid-40's. He told me that it's only standard after 50, so I had my first one this year. It's not covered by my health insurance (semi-private), but I'm sure they'd take you, if you have to pay for it yourself anyway. Give them a call and ask.
Good luck!

P.S. I saw Dr. George Berkovits - I'm pretty sure he speaks English.

No but I have been to the Inselspital for other things and they seem like a normal academic hospital. They are the only major hospital for Kanton Bern classified at the highest level of treatments (5), in other words, all the more specialized or difficult treatments are available here, so I think it is your best best in our region

Re: Where to get a mammography done?

Hey

Just wanted to update you all... I went to brustzentrum on Seefeldstrasse - http://www.brust-zentrum.ch/
(get off at Wildbachstr., the stop right before Bahnof Tiefenbrunnen).

They were so SO lovely and helpful. Very kind, polite, sensitive and efficient. The doctors came out personally to the waiting room and escorted you in. They really put me at ease and explained everything in English. I'd definately recommend this place to everyone.

Good Luck!

Re: Where to get a mammography done?

Does anyone know if mammograms are compulsory in Switzerland? I just received a pamphlet addressed to my name about all kinds of info I couldn't really understand. I hope it's just a matter of my insurance company passing on my details to these agencies/medical facilities and not something they make you do.

Re: Where to get a mammography done?

The bad thing about the Women's Clinic (Frauenklinik) of the University Hospital Zurich is not the doctors, but the "anmeldung" desk when we need to make an appointment. They were just not trying to help at all. Twice I went there and trying to ask whether I can have this and that examination, using English and body gesture. But the lady there was just staring at me, insisted that she didn't understand at all and asked me to speak German. I said I didn't know the term in German, then she actually said that's not her problem

Re: Where to get a mammography done?

Sometimes it helps to have it written down - in English and/or in German.

They might recognise the word in written form but not the way we say it in English...
