I am so sorry to hear that.
For the record, I never thought of you as a nuisance on this forum. I remember your keen interest when my cat was ill and I still appreciate it.
All the best, Keith.

JBZ86 - a bit of sympathy wouldn't go amiss, no?

Those of us who have never suffered from depression have no idea how bad it can feel. Keith I sincerely hope you'll get the right treatment and that Spring will soon help lift your spirits.

Re: Diagnosed with depression

Do you have any idea if anything particular has led to this? Although this can be actually of no use as the "cause" (not that there is just one cause but often you find there is something which particularly contributed) cannot be changed/you are powerless to influence.

I do wish you well. Above all, be kind to yourself.

I was adopting the reverse physcology approach. When I am pissed off, down, annoyed etc, 100 people telling me to keep my chin up doesn't seem to change things. Someone who can make me chuckle or bring a wee smile to the face with a small quip can do more than 100 condolences

Re: Diagnosed with depression

Hey Keith,

Always remember that depression is a sickness, a chemical state of mind. One could be at the top of their game with nothing but positives in life's standards, but when a depressive trend hits-it feels horrible. Conversely things in one's life could be rock bottom when one's at the opposite of a depressive phase--and one could still be super happy.

Personally, I've dealth with it for my entire life. Tried a bunch of the perscriptions in my early teens, but wasn't pleased with the zombie they made me. Lately I've tried B12 supplements, nothing negative to say, but only a month so far.
The best advice I can think of is embrace it! As an engineer/problem solver/planner/trouble shooter, the depressed mind is very applicable in foreseeing future issues and potential roadblocks that 'rosy-glasses' might miss. The half-full vs. Half empty glass is still the same glass. But the one who sees it half empty can foresee the empty glass and plan for it!

Can't imagine what you're going through, but certainly know that being alone at a time like this and in a foreign country has got to be hard.

I don't know you but I think you need to give yourself some serious credit: for addressing the issue by going to the doctor, and even coming on here and saying it (typing it) out loud. Be proud of yourself for that and view it as a real step in the right direction. I hope that you find some solace in the words of our fellow EFers and wish you all the best.

Re: Diagnosed with depression

In fact, people who stay calm under extreme pressure (think fire fighters or frontline military commanders) are often clinically depressed, and apparently that's why they're soo calm (and good). They anticipate the worst to happen, so all the things that happen around them and that would freak "healty" people out sort of pass them by.

Not that that makes a case in favour of clinical depression.

Alas, depression is a luxury that I cannot afford.

So I'm calm, and nonplussed by it all.
