Re: Just found out I'm pregnant

I feel for all you pregnant girlies with morning sickness. I've had it for the entire pregnancy and with my due date around the corner, it looks as though I'll have it until baby is out!

None of the usual suggestions made any difference for me. I basically had to eat simple foods out of necessity rather than appetite. Most things I usually like made me queasy. I have eaten crazy amounts of fruit and I drink a lot of ice water.

For those mentioning ginger biscuits, Ikea does some very thin, crispy ones that are nice.

Funny as pregnancy is always associated with cravings and I've not had any yet. Just aversions..eep.

Thanks for the tip on the Ikea ginger thins. I looked in Migros and Coop and couldnt find anything. It resorted to me buying ginger nuts from britshop.ch.

Congratulations and best of luck!
I am in Oerlikon & I do not speak the language so I will also definitely need English speaking help. Thanks for the offer of help.

Hey there, I'm newly sprugged up as well (8 weeks; first time; surprise). My normal Gyno was a bit causual for my taste, so I'm looking for another with the help of my GP. Where are you located? Do you speak the language or are you going to need English birthing classes and the like? I'll be glad to ask my docs what they know if you're based in Zürich.
Happy growing.

Re: Just found out I'm pregnant

I know. My doctor did the same. Here I was telling her how everything tasted bitter and food was so awful to taste and she was smiling away and saying, oh yes, that's normal.

My doctor also smiles and says "Great" and "Wonderful" after I tell him I feel like crap. He told me the worse I feel the better it is for the baby. I have to keep reminding myself I WANTED to be pregnant.

Re: Just found out I'm pregnant

So great to read that others are in a similar situation as myself! Although I hope your morning sickness passes...I don't wish that on anyone!

I am 14 weeks along and have only lived in Switzerland ten months. The pregnancy wasn't planned (surprise!) but am getting more used to the idea. I found a wonderful doctor in Zurich but would also like to meet more English speaking (I am still struggling with learning German) people in a similar situation.

Well since posting I have struggled terribly with morning sickness. Vomiting up to 8 times a day has not been pretty. I've tried the usual remedies advised; eat little and often, ginger tea , plain foods etc. The only thing that has worked for me is Itinerol given to me by the gynae. It's my new best friend and apparently safe to take. Hopefully the sickness will pass. Also not slept much despite all advice to sleep so been resting mainly. Insomnia is a bitch.
keep up good spirits it will go away and then you'll feel great (at least as long as you can still see your feet LOL)

I really feel for those of you who suffer from morning sickness. I never experienced this with both pregnancies. Really wonder why some suffer like this and others do not. Hope it passes soon so you can enjoy being pregnant.

Thanks! Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. It's feels like flu but replace the bunged up nose with projectile vomit and aversions to once loved food.

However, I find getting out and not dwelling somehow allows me to get through the day. 4 weeks left of 1 st trimester.

Re: Just found out I'm pregnant

What's crazy is that from one pregnancy to the next it can change completely!

For my son I felt vaguely nauseous the first trimester. Otherwise I was ecstatic, full of energy.

With my daughter, the morning sickness lasted 6 months, and I felt really down for the whole pregnancy: tired, depressed, crying a lot.

Oh poor you :-(. 6 months! God I hope it stops soon. I can imagine I'll be a jibbering wreck otherwise. Itinerol seems to be wearing off.

Re: Just found out I'm pregnant

Needing a rant or some virtual love or my life back!!! Feeling somewhat trapped in my nausciousness. Can't seem to get on with day to day things. The morning (all day) sickness has not died down.

I think it's making me depressed as I seem to cry whenever my head is in that toilet bowl now. My OH is feeling the strain of my misery.

What can I do? B6 not working, ginger makes me puke and I try to eat little and often but the waves of nausciousness keep coming back.

Primperan. It's stronger than B6, but on prescription only. As its an 'old' molecule, we know it's safe during pregnancy. OB routinely prescribe it here for morning sickness.

I really feel for you, as I experienced the same during my pregnancy. But in my case it evolved into pre-birth depression and required treatment. If you feel you can't stop crying, are much more depressed than normal for more than a week or two, please seak professional help. Those depressions are hormone-related but can lead to severe post-partum depression and interfere with your bonding with the baby.

I don't want to worry you, just to be sure you're aware of what could happen and don't hesitate to mention it to your OB.

Re: Just found out I'm pregnant

I survived 2 of the pregnancies with Zofran, RX only, from my gyn after the 2 pregnancies before that ended with a week hospital stay due to dehydration...

Make an appointment, yes nausea is a sign of healthy pregnancy (doubling HCG and all that fun) but you don't have to suffer to that extreme.

Re: Just found out I'm pregnant

Morning sickness is the worst type of sickness ever. I had severe MS with my first pregnancy and Hypermesis Gravidarum with my second so I can relate to how you feel. Please talk to your Dr, there are meds that are safe to take that will at least allow you to function and keep something in your stomach. Most of all though do not worry about your baby even if you can't keep anything down, my Dr assured me my baby would get all the nutrients it needed from me. My biggest tip is to find an isotonic drink you like, mine was Isostar Lemon, I could take little sips of it not throw up. Managing that kept me hydrated enough to keep out of hospital.

Re: Just found out I'm pregnant

I've used banana with my patients... Sounds kinda goofey, but it worked many times. Eat just one or two bites at a time, before you get up, before you eat other stuff, chew it really good, banana coats the stomach lining and keeps the acid down. It didn't work quite every time, but almost all of them had some relief! Give it a try!
As for the depression, normal when you are nauseous pretty much all the time. Do seek help though if you need... There is a good cocktail (combination of drugs) specifically for hyperemesis... But mostly given at the hospital. And keep in mind... It will be over... I hope very soon for you :-)

If my head was in the toilet everyday, I'd be crying too. But you and I are in similar boats. My "morning" sickness still has not subsided (19 weeks today) and lasts the whole day. The only time I have [I]some[I] relief is when I'm sleeping. But then of course, you need to get up to pee.

I finally spoke with my doctor about just how bad it is, and he suggested that the nausea could be caused from acid reflux and gave a prescription for a type of milk of magnesia. The Itenerol didn't help me at all. If you normally vomit easily, acid reflux could cause you to be vomiting now, because one of the hormones released during pregnancy keeps the flap that covers the stomach from contracting normally.

So as others suggested -- talk to you doctor. He may be able to help. And don't wait until your next appointment. Call the office first thing Monday. They may even be able to send a prescription to your local pharmacy.

In the meantime, have you tried drinking milk? Sipping a glass of milk (or 2) can help neutralize the acids in the stomach and give some relief.
