There probably are but they're not going to admit it here - we don't really want IP addresses, our email and where our children go to school all linked together off-line in Excel spreadsheets or otherwise - there seems to be some accountability problems here.

I'll try and send you a PM later.

(Can mods read private PMs too?)

Do you want your child to have friends in the same street, same block, same town?
If yes, send him to the local school.

If you are happy for the child to have no friends close to home, where you play taxi service everywhere, then the international schools can be considered

Those are really the only choices you have....

For me, I thought local school friends was very important.... and time has proven that it was a very wise decision.

Re: Local school in Au/wadenswil

Every local school offers german lessons for expat children, so he will learn fast and will be ideal for integration.
Of course the mix of nationalities is quite large in public schools and I've always seen that as an advantage.

Re: Local school in Au/wadenswil

I understand that you just apply to the Gemeinde and they allocate you a space...someone mentioned specific integration language classes - is this as part of the usual class or completely separate...also worried as she is older ....

Yes, your Gemeinde will allocate your child to his class. All schools offer free DAZ (German as Additional Language) courses. Additionally, some places are running integration classes depending on numbers and space available. From what I gather on Wädenswils website, they are offering an integration class called "Kleinklasse E". She would join this class until her German is sufficient to follow a classroom discussion.

Re: Local school in Au/wadenswil

My son just started at the local school in Steinibach (near Bern) and he goes to a German language class 2 mornings a week. Before that, we were living in Bern stadt and he went to a fulltime integration class. As Knorrli mentioned, the exact type of programm offered by each Gemeind depends on numbers, but each area will have something available.

I have a cousin living in Au, and she has 2 boys aged about 8 and 12, which I assume go to the local schools. If it would help, I can ask her what the primary school is like.

But in the meantime, get in contact with the local Schulamt, and they will sort it all for you.

Re: Local school in Au/wadenswil

That would be great thanks as I don't even know where the school is!!( we don't move to Au til June) After 2 years in international school it feels like a big move but she is really keen to become bilingual and she will never achieve that at international school!
