Pregnant and Just moved to Basel

Hi there,

I just moved to Basel yesterday and I am 5 months pregnant. I had my insurance sorted though and I need help and suggestions on how to choose the best Medical facilities available for me and the baby in reference to Gyanec/Obstetrician. If there are any maternity Clinics with all facilities under one roof or if University Hospital is my only option. If any one of you could recommend best English speaking G/O it would be of great help...

Well, Just want to mention went for the Carnival March last evening and I got a baby diddle from one of the wagon:-) Karmic I believe

Re: Pregnant and Just moved to Basel

P Tweedy, if you do a search, you'll probably come up with a few options.

A pretty good resource is doctor.ch, you can search for the type of doctor you're looking for and it lists what languages they speak, what specialties they have, etc etc.

One thing I've learned over the past few years is that it really is a good idea to "interview" a couple of doctors before settling on one. I may have good rapport with one, you may like the bedside manner of another, so this is why it's a good idea to have an office visit just for that purpose. (Searching this forum, you should find some recommendations about specific doctors though)

Good luck!

Re: Pregnant and Just moved to Basel

Hey - and welcome to Basel.

I am also pregnant and due late June, so if you want to meet up I am game. I am thinking of doing some pre-natal yoga - let me know if you want to join.

I am very happy with my doctor and have heard good things abouth Frauenspital as well as Bethesda for giving birth (apparently the food is amazing at the latter ). PM me if you want more info on docs details - the assistant there also speaks English which is extremely helpful in some cases...

Good luck - and hope to meet up!

And loads of info, people to meet, english antenatal classes and the like can be found via the Basel Children's Trust. If you decide to become a member then ask for the Having a Baby in Basel booklet and come along to the Bumps and Babes group (for pregnant women and parents with kids under 1-ish). Honestly the best thing I ever did was joining when I was first pregnant - that's 8 years ago now and I still meet up regularly with BCT friends - both old and new.

Welcome to Basel ... and congratulations!
A favorite English-speaking OB/Gyn is Dr. Elizabeth Daly.

Another thing you might want to do is go to hospital 'having a baby here' information nights.
The next Frauenspital English Information evening is on March 13th. The Bethesda Hospital English Information night is on the first Wednesday of every month (i.e. there is one tonight).

I had my daughter in the Frauenspital (University Hospital) and they were great.

Re: Pregnant and Just moved to Basel

Congrats and welcome to Basel!

Just a quick thought about Dr Daly, I tried to get an appointment with her last Aug/Sept when I first moved here and she told me she had a 3 month waiting list (not sure if that's new patients or everyone). May not be the case now but just something to bear in mind.

I guess it's a good sign that she is very popular!

Re: Pregnant and Just moved to Basel

Hiya, welcome to Basel and congratulations on your pregnancy.

I had all my pre-natal care and births (2) at Frauenspital, polyclinic in Basel university spital.

I found 3 bad things,
1st- they had a team of obstetricians, so you never knew who was seeing until you walked in, although all were very competent and everything was noted. With my second pregnancy i had complications and required specialized care, there i was assigned a specific obstetrician throughout my pregnancy.
2nd the waiting times can be long, but that is because they take care of their patients and do not care if the appointment goes on for longer than expected. For example my hubby fainted on our 1st ever pre-natal apoitment, when we finally left the waiting room was FULL.
3rd the colour of the floor on the birth and nursery area is awful LOL.

The great things:
They are one of the best equipped hospitals in Switzerland. The scan machines were explained to us as "the rolls royce" of scanners.
The birthing rooms are awesome.
They have highly trained and competent staff, i never encountered anyone who was not.
Most members of staff, even the nurses, speak English.
Its very clean.

Most important of all, there fast and professional reaction saved my son's life, this is a fact, i have read the medical records.

Hi,

Thank you for the information.
I did go to Bethesda Hospital yesterday and had a very nice first feeling. I liked the staff and the labor room and they all speak English that was great.
And the Gyanec/Ob I am seeking appointments are also associated with the hospital
I am also going to University Hospital on 13th March to get a feel and then finally take a call.
I still have to fix the Gynace but my appointments start next week so lets see...
Thank you once again for the information.

Marth You are awesome. Thank you for sharing everything in black and white.
I appreciate it. And definitely will look for the birth & Nursery floor on 13th :-)
Lets see how I feel on my visit there but like I said earlier I had been to Bethesda Hospital last Night and had a very comfortable and happy feeling.
But I am happy to know that your son was saved by the competent staff and I sincerely pray no mother should go through such complications...
Will share with you my first impression of Uni Hospital...

Happy Holi and many thanks!
