would you help me choosing a name for my baby girl? :)

I am expecting a baby, she should be coming by the end of April, but I still have not chosen a name for her...
I would like a name that sounds nice both here in Switzerland both in Italy (we are Italian). And in English too...

Here is a list of names I like... please help me, tell me your impressions, and how do they sound in your language...
THANKS!

- Marian (This is my favourite, but in some languages it's a boy's name... what do you think?)
- Cecilia (Somebody told me that Cecilia doesn't sound nice in Switzerland, it's an "old lady's name"...)
- Agata

Combination:

- Cecilia Marian
- Marian Lily (is it too "meaningful"?)

Impressions, comments, suggestions?
thank you!

Marion - I like it as a girls name. IN NZ, it would NOT be used as a boys name unless one was prepared for the boy to be teeased a lot at school.

Agata - Hhhmmm, at risk of being mispronounced by people ( teachers) in different places. Personally, it sounds to close to Agatha to me - which conjurers up a picture of a crabby old great aunt. Also, it may be shortened to Aga or Ag.

Cecelia or Celia - I like this, but be prepared for it being shortened to Cecil, or Cec, or even Cee. ( I know people with all these variations.)

Personally, my favourite Swiss name is Heidi. It has tradition ( via the books at least) and I think it has a nice soft sound. I also like Johanna, but then I am biased :-)

He chose the name for our first son, and now it's my turn
Anyway, he likes Marian, he doesn't like Cecilia...

My son, on his part, doesn't want to listen to anything else: he wants his sister to be called Lily.... (nor me nor my husband like Lily so much...)

Marian would more often be spelt Marianne in english (Marianne Faithfull for example). Although your spelling is perfect acceptable and is used for girls (Maid Marian of Robin Hood fame, Marian Keyes the author). It's a little old-fashioned but older names seem to be in fashion at the moment.
Just make sure that whatever you (and the father) choose, it 'sounds' right with the surname the child will have. Ditto for any middle name if you decide to have one.
And that the initials don't spell or suggest anything silly or rude!

My next door neighbour is a young woman named Cecilia. The only problem I have with the name is the Simon and Garfunkel song...

Marian in england would actually usually be Marion, but as in all names theres no given you can spell them however you like.

Heidi is pretty! But isn't it a nick name? (from Hadelheid, maybe?)

Actually, I initally wanted a "very Swiss name", since I really love this country and in particular Basel. If it was a boy, maybe I would have called him Basil.

So if you have ideas for a name that can be a tribute to Switzerland or to Basel, I'd be grateful!

Congratulations.

I love Marian, but here you'll definitely run the risk of people misspelling it "Marianne" a trillion times a week, and mispronouncing it as mah-ri-ann as opposed to mary-ann.

Marian Lily is beautiful.

Agata reminds me of Agatha Christie

Me too!
Son's name is Antonio. That's why I would like Agata / Agatha (which is also beautiful in its meaning and origins).

Actually, it is very pretty, but someone told me that it's "in fashion" here in Switzerland lately... and moreover it sounds like a short name to me, as if her name was Lilian, but people call her Lily... (sorry, I can't explain it better, I hope you understand what I mean).

But then they get to open each others mail.

Heidi, Heidi, Heidi!

Basil for a boy? Oh no! Basil's and even Barry's get called "Baz" or even "Spaz" by classmates at a certain age.

Did I mention Heidi for a girl?

I guess you could always have Helvitia. But I wouldn't.

Heidi, Heid, Heidi.

I love Lily a lot too! Actually, it's the nickname of my baby girl

I don't like Marian, as for me it sounds like the name of an old peasant woman (quite typical name in my grandmum's generation). Not that I have anything against old peasants, but it just doesn't sound right for a baby.

I find Heidi positively dreadful to be honest; probably the kitschest thing I've ever heard. And I'm 100% Swiss
