Others with kidney disease?

Hi all,

I have posted previously on here about diabeties. Which I have had for 30 years!
Now, for over 5 years, I have had kidney disease (of course, related to the damn diabeties!). I will going through a transplantation in Zürich soon. Not on diaylsis yet...

My question is:

Are there any folks here who also have kidney disease? I live in Basel, but I will be going to Zürich for doctor appointments. This is because I am doing a double tranplatation (kidney and pancreas). just looking for folks with similar health issues...

Re: Others with kidney disease?

Hope it all goes well for you - I did not realise that a pancreas could be transplanted as well as kidneys.

You take care of yourself

I don't,

But best of luck. My aunt went through this in a very traumatic experience in the very bad Canadian health system. She didn't have a donor for a very long and stressful time. She got one at the very end when her life was hanging on the edge.

She is now healthy and active.

Let us know when it will be the time, we will think of you.

Re: Others with kidney disease?

I have wonderful health care here. NO complaints Esp. coming from the U.S....

Initially, when they asked if i wanted a kidney or do the both the kidney and the pancreas. I picked the double because that would mean being rid of the diabeites. Since eventually, the diabeties will 'kill' the new kidney (in years).

Months later, I found out since I am doing a double transplatation, that I will be put on the top of the transplation list. With only a kidney, you have to wait years sometimes (even here).

Wow! All the best! I didn't know you could do a pancreas either, but esp with diabetes, it makes sense to take the pancreas too. Keep us posted!

Not really kidney disease, but I have been to the urology dept at USZ for a procedure for the kidneys. Im also type one diabetic, but it wasnt related. Im actually up at the USZ on Monday to see their endo dept for yet something else. God, they love me up there...

Anyway, good luck. I hope you have a good set of professionals, a completely successful transplant and a quick recovery.

Re: Others with kidney disease?

An Australian friend of mine has been on dialysis for about 3 years. She has a syndrome which includes malformation of her kidneys. I hope you can get the transplant before you get to the dialysis stage, but on the other hand, she feels much much much better on dialysis than she did before she started the treatment...

The waiting list in Australia is about 7 years...maybe longer if you have a rare blood type or a more complex condition...

Wow on the pancreas, though. That really interests me because my son has Type 1 diabetes so we know all about that side of things...

Re: Others with kidney disease?

Hi all,

I just finally was called to Zürich for surgery. They put in a new kidney & pancreas after waiting not too long, However, it seemed forever with the diaylsis torment. After3 day of sleeping and basically being catatonic, I am finally able to bring a cup of tea (only H2O for 3 days). The best tea ever !!!!!!!!!

Re: Others with kidney disease?

Hi, I am considering to move with my husband to Switzerland. He is already working in Basel. But worry about Dialysis costs.... What was your experience on terms of the Health insurance? Would like to know if the Health Insurance there would cover my kidney desease. Will be in dialysis in about a year and then in transplant list and lost about the cost... any enlightenment of what to expect very much appreciated.

Re: Others with kidney disease?

You will have to pay for medical aid (300-500CHF per month) and a certain excess each year (ranging from 300 to 2500CHF) and thereafter a maximum of 700CHF per year, other than that the rest (all of it, any medical costs) will all be paid for by the medical aid if dialysis is indeed necessary according to your doctors.

Re: Others with kidney disease?

As mentioned and as your husband knows already, there's a mandatory health insurance for everyone which is not income related. This will cover all costs less a deductible and self-pay element. Premiums vary according to the deductible. The most it should cost you in a year is around 7000CHF. If you want extras like private room this will cost more. You need to get approval from your insurance before any (non-emergency) operation.
