Place for a huge family party (Basel)!

A long shot, but just on the offchance someone might have an inspired suggestion or know a place near them.... on I go....

As some of you probably know I'm rather heavily involved with a group called the BCT (Basel Children's Trust) and this year we will be 20 years old (yaaay!) so we're obviously going to have a massive party

We're basically looking for all potential leads of somewhere we can have our little "fest".

The requirements are as follows (in no particular order!):
  • There could easily be 100 adults plus 100 kids - it could be a lot more on a nice sunny day, right now we don't really know (our full membership is close to 300 families) but it's likely that people would come and go during the event.
  • It will be in the late summer (after school holidays finish) so ideally it would be an outdoor space but with the possibility of us being able to cower indoors somewhere if it happened to tip with rain.
  • We'd like to be able to BBQ or have some kind of "food making" facilities.
  • Toilets also needed.
  • We'd like space to do outdoor games - like sack race, frisbee, football, who knows
  • And ideally we'd like to be able to put up a bouncy castle (that requires electricity supply, space and permission)
  • Obviously we are a charity so.... well.... as cheap as humanly possible or free even!
  • Our families are in Basel and all around the area, so somewhere reasonably central or accessible by tram (it would be OK if it were in Reihen or Munchenstein or something but experience tells us a lot of people would not come if they have to go by train e.g. Liestal is too far for example.)
We do have some ideas and some things we're looking into, but it never hurt to ask did it? So if you know somewhere ideal, or even if you'd like to offer us your huge outdoor space any ideas happily received.

Thank you!

With those requirements only Grün 80 comes to my mind or perhaps the Kannenfeldpark. For an indoor place you could check Union.

Thanks, Green 80 and Kannenfeld are certainly on our list for investigation Must admit I am a huge fan of Green 80 and all the Basel parks, not quite sure how it works with somehow "renting" part of a park, but we're finding out.

Loving that list perhaps not for this particular party, but I'm sticking it in my file for possible things in the future (including my kids birthday parties!)

Hmmm, probably just about doable on the budget - 500CHF is probably high end - and I think we'd need a full day for set up and clean up). It's a good location and we'll put it on the investigation list also thanks.

Thanks for suggestions - keep em coming if you have others.

Ah - just read the conditions for Lange Erlen - and they have exclusive caterers so you can't bring your own food, so that would have to cross them off. That's annoying . We definitely can't afford to pay someone else for catering - and we're quite good at doing our own (as we know what kids like to eat!)

Re: Place for a huge family party (Basel)!

The Waldehutte list has locations in Allschwil, Muttenz and Pratteln. Our village (too far out for you) has a fabulous new woods hut with full kitchen, log burning stoves, trestle tables, grilling areas outside and just all you could want for a fabulous party. It is frequently rented out at the weekends. Ours costs 450 Chf to rent for the day - so that would be your budget just about gone - but it is worth a try to look at those huts close into Basel on the list SBrinz provided as these are definitely the best kids party locations I can think of.

Gymboree in central Basel does children's parties at the weekend but your numbers may be too many for them .. you can but ask.

Re: Place for a huge family party (Basel)!

I think it is possible to hire at least parts of the centre that is under the TriRosenbruke, on the KleineBasel side of the river, for one off occassions. - that could give you an indoor/outdoor option - bbq outside, plus use of the inside area for a set time.

If you use Grun 80, look at hiring one of the rooms on the bottom level of the restaurant, for an inside option, as well as using nearby outdoor space.

Or, one of the smaller parks, such as the one at the end of Margarethanstrasse ( used for rugby, I think) There are toilet facilities, but I don't know if it also has any under cover space as well - take a few gazebo type tents?

Another alternative could be to hire one of the canoe/rowing club rooms on the island above the Birsfelden lock. That would give you a table area, as well as the outside grassy areas for games etc.

Across the river and just over the border, is the Grenzach/Whylen rowing club. They have a great clubhouse, an outside grassy area and I know they hire out to the public for parties etc.
