Double billing by hospital

I had an appointment at the unsipital Zürich in december for a treatment. It was fairly routine, no shots, xrays...etc. They sent my insurance company an itemized bill and me a copy for the records. The insurance company billed me because i was under the deductible. I paid, and all was ok.

Then this month, the unispital sends another bill to my insurance company and me. Luckily I had saved the previous bill. I was astounded....it was identical to my first bill except in the second bill they added a 147 chf charge that was not on the original bill. I thought huh...how can that be.

So I called my insurance company and said..."hey i think theres something fishy about this bill...i think this hospital is double dipping" The insurance company rep said, no thats fine, its normal that hospitals break up a bill into several identical bills." But maybe you should call them up to see if they made a clerical error. I said...isnt that your job??

My question is, is it normal that a hospital, specifically perhaps this hospital to break up a bill into several smaller bills. There was no notice on the bill saying "Bill 1 of 2" or something like that. How are you supposed to know how much you owe?

The fist bill was 680 chf...the second was 827 (680+147).....all that for a 2 hour consultation!

Re: Double billing by hospital

What exactly does the bill say the 147 is for?

"Fines" sounds like it could be late fees. You should clarify the bill was actually paid. I'm guessing it's marked as still unpaid.

Re: Double billing by hospital

I had hospital charges broken up into two bills. But just like yours (and normal for all doctor visits as far as I can tell) there was a line-by-line explaination of all charges, so I was able to tell I wasn't paying for the same thing more than once.

I would absolutely use the insurance company to clear up such a problem, and my insurance is usually very good about such things. But it might be worth it to contact the hospital on your own behalf as well.

Whats confusing is that it is really two identical bills....

Bill 1 would say

Behandlung durch den Fachartz-----23.89 CHF

on Bill 2 it says

Behandlung durch den Fachartz-----23.89 CHF

What my insurance company is saying is that....the actual charge is 47.78 (23.89*2) and that they just split the cost of each itemized line.

However it doesn't explain why Bill 2 has an extra 174 CHF charge for "Duplex Sonografie"

Re: Double billing by hospital

Maybe they forgot the last item. You're really only going to get to the bottom of this by calling them. Good luck! & keep us updated. We love to hear what happens.

Re: Double billing by hospital

It seems to me that they have missed the sonography on their first bill.

Since they didn't have the first one booked as paid (very likely as insurance pays the bills on deadline and never earlier), they just resent the complete bill rendering the first one invalid.

You should probably only pay the difference, and not the complete amount- call the hospital, explain the situation and ask for a corrected invoice.

I wish it were that easy. There are two complications...my insurance company has already paid the second bill. So theres the matter of getting the hospital to refund this. Also, with the second bill I was already over my deductible, so the insurance only billed me 10% (about 82 chf). So i can't just refuse to pay the $147.

The 82 chf is not a big deal. However, the principle of the matter is what annoys me. No wonder our insurance rates are going through the roof when the insurance companies are so blase about their records. I don't think a hospital should profit excessively either....they already got their (too large IMO) share

Re: Double billing by hospital

Duplex sonografie is an ultrasound exam. You should know if you had that. If you did and it wasn't on the first bill, then there is no problem.
