Pregnancy and Birth in Lugano

Hello there

I have recently happily found out that I am pregnant. I have done a quick search and though there are many threads with advice on the practicalities of pre-natal care and birth in many other Swiss cities it does not seem to be the case for Lugano!

If anyone has any recommendations for a English speaking doctor/gynaecologist and even how one proceeds (it all seems so different and daunting compared to the UK ) I will be eternally grateful.

Thank you.

Hi,

We are also based in Lugano (well, just outside) and in 2 months our baby will arrive....we had a doctor which is very very good in our opinion.

Dr Christian Polli and he is based in the Lugano Main Hosptal.

On a side point, I am a photographer so I am of course documenting the progress - feel free to check it out:

Thanks, Bobo. I'll check out your photography.

Can I ask, what did you do first of all? In the UK, you go to your doctor who refers you to the Midwife. I am guessing this is not the same here. Where do you make your initial enquiries? Directly to the ob/gynae?

I hope everything is going well for you too!

Re: Pregnancy and Birth in Lugano

Ya here it works differently.

We had a bit of emergency the first time and in that way found our doctor. He then invited us back for a visit (so I presume you call and make a first appointment). Our doctor then explained that we are meeting with him in every single visit (so no midwife) and he will be with us all the way to the delivery. During the pregnancy there will be midwifes supporting but the actual delivery will be done by him.

They are also very thorough - you get scans almost every single time you go, they test your blood several times and so on. They do explain all the steps.

I am very happy that we are having the baby in Switzerland.

Okay just to clarify, when you say doctor you mean the ob/gynae not the GP (general family doctor). You go directly to the main man. Hmmm, this is all very different and strange to me. Does Dr. Polli speak English or are you guys doing it in Italian?

Sorry for so many questions!

Your photo's are fantastic and your fiancee is stunningly beautiful! Wow!

Re: Pregnancy and Birth in Lugano

He speaks perfect English (we are from Sweden/Spain).

And yes - the main man straight away.....it is not our GP. Yup, it is different, and in my view, better

A lot of people slate stuff in Switzerland but this part is really good.

Also, when you give birth you can stay up to 10 days. If you dont use those 10 (lets say you stay 6) - then the remaining 4 days you will get a midwife coming to your house over the first 2 weeks.

Yes, directly to the ob/gynae, even if you have an insurance with a "family doctor".

Re: Pregnancy and Birth in Lugano

Right, thank you guys so much. You have given me a much better understanding of what steps I need to take.

I have also heard that the healthcare in Switzerland is of a very high standard, I guess I will be finding out soon enough, all being well over the next few months.

Hi LuxLisbon,

First of all congratulations!

And I can only agree with what Bobo says, healthcare here is of a pretty good standard! I assume you probably already have found a gyneacologist? If not I can definitely recommend you a good one!

I changed about a month ago because the first one was really not "pleasant" at all. I am currenlty 5 months pregnant and really happy with the follow up I am now receiving!

Best of luck and let me know if you need more info!

Re: Pregnancy and Birth in Lugano

Hi LuxLisbon,

Congratulations!

I agree with St2lemans Linda Leidi is very good and she speaks good English, I would recommend her. I went to Dr Leidi when i was pregnant with my second child I had only been in Lugano for 5 weeks when I found out! She was fantastic, the level of care was excellent and she delivered my son (not like in the UK where its whoever is on duty).

If you have any more questions i'd be happy to help.
Take Care

Michelle

Re: Pregnancy and Birth in Lugano

Hi there,

No I don't have a gynaecologist. I have had no medical care whatsoever since I moved to Switzerland. I haven't needed to, nor my husband in over two years. I guess we are very healthy!

Please do throw your recommendation into the mix 11Liv and tell me about your experiences if not too personal.

Linda Leidi is sounding like a good bet so far, if she is covered by my basic healthcare, with two recommendations. This is my first child so I really feel like I need someone compassionate who will really support me through the next nerve-racking few months!

A future baby meet-up would be great too

Re: Pregnancy and Birth in Lugano

Hey good to come across this! Looks like I willmove to Lugano (from London) in the spring with hubby and a toddler. We would then have our second baby there.

I had an emergency c section with my daughter, hoping to have a planned one next time. Not sure if they are more open to this in switzerland...

Hope the pregnancy is going smoothly!

We asked about this and they said they normally only do one if it is needed.

Good luck!!

Re: Pregnancy and Birth in Lugano

Yep same in the UK too but if you've had An emergency c-section already you might "qualify" for a c-section again... This would be my choice for personal reasons which I wont go into now as its not what this thread is about

Besides that I'm not even pregnant yet nor living in Lugano... So just lurking here in the shadows

Re: Pregnancy and Birth in Lugano

Hi on this topic...has anyone an idea of any bi-lingual pre-natal courses in Ticino /Lugano area. I could do Italian fairly easily but just as an easy option if English was available i'd take it.

Thanks and congrats to all my fellow new and prospective parents...
