Expecting a baby in October, moving to Geneva in August - midwife question

My girlfriend and I are moving to Geneva in August for a post I just received at the University, and our baby is due in October. Can anyone point me toward any arrangements we ought to be making for a midwife or birthing facility. She's VERY healthy, as is the baby, at least so far, and there's no reason we should need any kind of hospital or surgical birth - which I've been lead to understand are much rarer in Europe anyway?

Re: Making a baby in Geneva?

I've found a list of midwives allowed to do that at home. You'll have to prove a couple of things. The link is in French, as it is Geneva, but the addresses are not that hard to understand, and the statistics is: 1% of Swiss mothers deliver at home.

In brakets, you see the languages each of them speak.

And these key words seem to be a good idea for you: - « Dix Lunes » à Genève, la « Grange Rouge » à Grens (VD)
Obviously too houses of birth or something along those lines. You'll find your way, I'm sure.

Following search words might give more results: accouchement à domicile Genève.

In Switzerland you will have to, by law, take out medical Insurance, there is no way of avoiding this. It will have to be paid from day one of your arrival, although you will have 2 months to organise this. Be careful, you have to pay for the full month from day one, so if you move on the 30th of a month, you will have to pay for full month. So try to move at the beginning of a month if you can.

I really do not want to worry you, but things don't always go according to plan. I was very healthy and fit for our first, 22 years old, and yet the baby was a sideways breech (eg coming back first not head first) and I just had to have an emergency caesarian. Nothing to do with being healthy and fit, or not. The cost of this could run into 1000s. Anyway, your health obligatory health insurance will cover this, so don't worry. Not being covered by health insurance in Switzerland is illegal and dangerous + hugely expensive. Just not worth it.

No need for a comma before the word 'but' Faltrad. I expected better of 'our' writer.

Re: Expecting a baby in October, moving to Geneva in August - midwife question

For what it is worth, I read today that some hospitals are now offering this no medical intervention natural type birth in hospitals with only the parents and a midwife present. Seems a hospital in Zurich is leading the way and alredy doing this while it is also planned for the CHUV (Lausanne) in future.
