Re: Mastitis remedies?

Bumping this thread back up with some new information that I feel is very important for breastfeeding women. As a result of the antibiotics, I developed milk duct and nipple thrush. It made mastitis seem like a walk in the park. What cleared it up was a course of fluconazole. But good luck getting treatment. :/

Neither pediatricians nor ob/gyns seem to know anything about this condition here in Switzerland, which is why it took me a long time to get it properly treated. My midwife is familiar with it and I obtained some information from friends/physicians in Canada and the United States.

It's critical that both you and your baby are treated for thrush, as your baby can get it in his or her mouth and pass it to you. It essentially gets passed back and forth. Your baby may have no symptoms but still must be treated.

It's still important to take probiotics whilst you're on the antibiotics as this can help you in preventing the condition. But unfortunately in my case, it wasn't sufficient. And if you're one of the rare few like me who have never had other yeast infections such as a vaginal one, don't assume you're immune from one of the milk ducts and nipples.

I've attached a couple of documents that may help. If you need the contact details of an ob/gyn who is familiar with treating the condition, please let me know via a pm.

The pain is really bad but if you're persistent in getting treatment, you can overcome it and continue breastfeeding. It's so worth it as little one and I are both doing very well now!

Re: Mastitis remedies?

I recently got oral thrush from my baby (terribly painful) but luckily didn't get it on my breasts, even though I've had to take antibiotics a few times already.

I'm happy you got treated. They say nipple thrush is not painful... I've heard that it was hell!
