register newborn for foreigners

Anyone can share their experience when registering newborn baby in swiss? or any thread to refer to?the rule for foreigners is for the parents to provide their birth certificates that are issued recently. This is difficult for people who no longer have family back home to help communicate with local authorities there.

In German, but probably the best link is this http://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/content/...rheiratet.html

Also, the hospital where you give birth will be able to give you more information.

Re: register newborn for foreigners

Congratulations for becoming proud parents !!!

If you / your partner has already submitted the documents (marriage certificate, birth certificates) at Swiss embassy of your home country for dependent visa processing then, a translated copy of these documents is kept at migrationsamt.

In this case there are 2 options.

# 1: You can contact the migrationsamt directly
(http://www.ma.zh.ch/internet/sicherh...e/kontakt.html), for copies of these documents. These copies are accepted by the zivilstandsamt without any restriction on the date of issue.

# 2: Alternatively, you can also tell the civil register office (zivilstandsamt) that the Migrationsamt has a translated copy of these documents. In this case zivilstandsamt will establish a contact with them directly. But this process usually can take few weeks of additional time.

Best is the option # 1. you can get your child registered with zivilstandsamt the very same day.

hope it helps...

Re: register newborn for foreigners

I don't know about where you are from (Singapore?), but I know that in the U.S., you can order a copy of your birth certificate online. Hopefully, with the world globalizing the way it is, it's becoming more common to be able to do such things while out of country.

We just submitted both U.S. and Swiss passport applications for our little one. Wow, was that a task!
