Urgently need a stomach specialist in central Zurich...

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a good stomach specialist?

I went to a nearby clinic at Zurich HB yesterday morning, did a blood test and was told it was the gastric flu and according to the blood test "not too bad". Was given 3 types of medication, anti-vomiting, antibiotics and something to calm the stomach (and the doc said this would stop the diarrhea) and a powder to mix with water to hydrate myself.

Well, more than 24 hrs later, I am not ANY better and as I was told not to eat but only have light soup or water, I am losing weight too fast and feeling weak too. And I am running to the bathroom every 10-15 mins through the entire night so you can imagine how bad it is...

Now am thinking whether I should go see a stomach specialist instead...? And I hope someone can recommend me a good one!

Thank you...

Whatever you do, keep drinking the reydration product (or rice water if you run out, or if that is not available a solution of 6 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 litre tap water if you run out). Oral rehydration is the primary treatment of gastic flu.

Get well soon.

Hello Summergirl,

I'm sorry you are poorly, I don't have a specialist that I can recommend, however in the meantime, I can suggest you follow the BRAT diet, if you have stopped vomiting. These foods are 'binding' and may help to reduce the diarrhoea and get some energy and nutrients back into your body.

Bananas/Bread
Rice
Apple (grate and let it go a bit brown, this is soothing for the stomach)
Tea (no milk/sugar)

Hope you feel better very soon!

Re: Urgently need a stomach specialist in central Zurich...

Please follow Tom's advice.

I can only offer my own experience, but gastroenterologists in private practice (here in SZ) deal mainly with referrals for specific procedures. And even with a GP referral and suspicion of a serious illness it took me 3 months to get an appointment.

YMMV, but with something like a gastric flu, if your condition worsens I'd call/visit the HB clinic again. The doctor who saw you initially is probably best placed to determine if the meds need more time to work, or if you should see a gastroenterologist at the hospital. The folks at the HB clinic can arrange that if needed. Or, see your own GP for the same.

Hope you feel better soon.

Re: Urgently need a stomach specialist in central Zurich...

Thank you all for your advice. I did get a recommendation for a specialist, but yes, a referral letter was needed, so I called my clinic again. Was advised to see how I feel tomorrow and made another appointment with them first to see how to proceed.

I am definitely making sure to re-hydrate myself... and hope to get better soon!

0) Real life is not Dr. House. Medications does not kick in and cure you immediately.
1) If it is the flu (a viral infect) your condition may last 3-5 days.
2) You were not given any medication that fights the flu itself but its symptoms and side effects (bacterial infections).
3) Antibiotics are good against bacterias not against viruses.
4) To fight the flu there is Tamiflu. But its efficiency is doubted by some.
5) If you want to see a specialist you should rather look for an infectious diseases specialist than a gastroenterologists.
6) Most importanly, get well soon.

Tamiflu is for influenza and not gastric flu.

You are right. Just learned something.
Why the hell to they call rotavirus, norovirus, adenovirus, and astrovirus infection and also Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, and Campylobacter infections "flu"?

Re: Urgently need a stomach specialist in central Zurich...

Sorry if I confused some... I have gastroenteritis, which didn't say much to me so when I googled it, it said <aka stomach (gastric) flu although it should not be mistaken as influenza>. I don't have the "flu".

In the past, when I had something similar, diarrhea never lasted more than a day, and it's day 3 now, hence I started to get uncomfortable...

Always a good idea to log onto EF with urgent medical cases.

Our years of quality training puts Medpoint and their ilk to shame.

I specialize in mind-reading, spiritual guidance and gynecology (not necessarily in that order). Advice only with an appointment.

What was your question again ....?

Re: Urgently need a stomach specialist in central Zurich...

I don't understand your necessity of sarcasm.

I didn't ask for medical help, I asked for recommendation of a good stomach specialist, which, people who've lived in Zurich longer than I have, might know of... Jeez...

Re: Urgently need a stomach specialist in central Zurich...

My opinion would be that you don't need a 'stomach' specialist...if you aren't keeping down any liquids and are going rapidly downhill (dehydration) then you need to head to the hospital. They will put you on a drip and get fluids and electrolytes into you and probably check to see exactly what is going on.

My experience is that once you hit a particular point of dehydration, it's extremely hard to keep up the oral fluids - so a drip makes a big difference.

If you really are going down hill fast, please go to the hospital.

On the rapid weight loss thing, what you are losing is mostly water. You can easily lose 4-6kg of water in a few days. If you've lost more than 10% of your bodyweight I'd be worried. But it's more a case of other symptoms and whether you are on a rapid downhill spiral.

Re: Urgently need a stomach specialist in central Zurich...

I got a horrible stomach flu in Mexico...couldn't keep anything down for a week, was too weak to do anything except lapse in and out of consciousness on my bathroom floor. Luckily I didn't get sick until after I got off the plane. Anyway. The only thing that worked was time and going back to the ER for the IV drip. So forget about the specialist and head to the ER for a drip of you aren't better tomorrow. I spent like 18 hours in the CHUV, they were awesome, just parked me somewhere and plugged me in and let me sleep.

Anecdotally that stomach flu seems to have permanently altered my gut flora, I developed a fructose intolerance immediately afterwards, so the gastroenterologist appointment I made when I had the stomach flu-but it took the Dr six weeks to see me- turned into my big food allergy diagnosis colonoscopy visit instead.

Not trying to hijack the thread with my gross food intolerance story just please keep it in mind in case you continue to feel not quite right for a few weeks. I thought I had some obscure GI disease or something and all it was was a stupid food allergy to fructose (considering I was eating a ton of apples because they were healthy and they were actually making me worse).

Get well soon.
