high schools in/near Montreaux

This is my first post. I am a US citizen, living in the States. I have a 13 yr old son who is dreaming of attending high school (2013-2014) in Switzerland where his aunt lives. While he plans to study French next year in preparation for his trip, I don't think he will be fluent enough to attend a school taught in French. Here are my questions:
1. Will he be limited to a private school?
2. Are there public schools that are taught in English (or bi-lingual)?
3. Can a US citizen attend a Swiss public school on a Student Visa?

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: high schools in/near Montreaux

Hello,

If his french is not good enough he will struggle to get a place in the swiss public system - he will also need some basic german as well.

Which means he would probably be limited to the international route - these are expensive (think 30-40,000chf per year) and if he is coming to experience the culture of switzerland he will not get that by attending an international school

no idea on the visa sorry

Re: high schools in/near Montreaux

First, it is not clear if he is coming here permanently or just for a one year cultural exchange. If permanently, it is a very difficult age with no or limited french, as he will have passed the age of the streaming so likely placed in intensive french and not much else. His ability at that age to get into the university stream, if indeed higher education is sought, would be very limited. Likely the apprenticship stream would be available.

If coming just for a short period of time to immerse in french, he likely could enjoy it, but realising he would likely lose a year of schooling that would not transfer when he went back home.

Second, as for the permit, he is a minor, so assume he will have to have a parent here. As US citizen parent(s), it will be difficult without employment, and you would have to stand behind swiss and EU citizens in that respect.

Public schools, in Montreux are french as dominant language, although german and english are taught as second languages in the higher grades, as well as some other languages as options as well, ie. italian.

At age 13, likely best to consider private or bi-ingual education if planning on going to university.
