Dispute with Dentist

I have read about how expensive it is here to get dental treatment.
But, what my wife went through is something that I never encountered before.

Basically, my wife went for a filling and the discussion with the dentist prior to the visit was to get one of her molar fixed.
She had local anesthetic injection and the treatment was for about 1 hour.
When done, she went to the settle the bill at the front desk and was told that the treatment cost about CHF 700.
Of course, she got curious about the high charge and was told that the dentist did 2 fillings (not 1).
Now, I looked at her molar and noticed that the dentist did a special filling using a composite.
The filling was hardly noticeable.
However, I could not see her pre-molar filling, which she was also charged for.

We called the dental office and the front desk told us that the doctor would call back. But he never did. We called again and was told the same thing. Again, the dentist didn't call us back.

We got the bill today and could see the detailed charges.
Even if the dentist did 2 fillings, the discussion prior to the treatment, which was based on an X-ray image, was to do only 1.

What could we do at this point?
Any advise will be highly appreciated.

TIA.

Re: Dispute with Dentist

I'm not saying what they did was right, but I have had two filling situations where once the dentist dug out the cavity, they noticed a second cavity on the next tooth on the side, which could only be seen when there was no filling in the first tooth. Although in one case, one of my "side cavities" did show up on an x-ray as a little dot, but they still needed to get in there to be sure.

They were still deceptive in not telling you, but a lot of dentists go in and fix what is in there while they are in there. It could have been a situation where the second tooth couldn't have been done on a second visit because it would involve "reopening" the first tooth.

Again, I'm not saying they were right in not warning you, but there could have been a definite medical reason to do two so just don't be surprised if that is their next argument.

Re: Dispute with Dentist

My dentist charges by the hour (includes materials), and 700 chf for 1 hour doesn't seem that high for a charge in Swiss compared to the £200 an hour I pay in the UK.

But 1 hour seems a long time for a filling.

One of my friends ended up paying about 4000 chf for a root filling

Why not get a dentist in France/Germany?

Re: Dispute with Dentist

Get yourself a nice weekend trip to Barcelona all ncluded and go to see a dentist there. Beach, tapas and great, affordable fillings!

It normally feels like 2 hours.

I'd agree that the charges seem about right for a filling and they can easily take an hour if done properly.

Re: Dispute with Dentist

Was it an X-Ray or a scan? I paid CHF 550 for a scan and a clean up.

This isn't a competition to see who can spend the most to get the least work done.

Re: Dispute with Dentist

I think the dentist did the right thing fixes two at once. Easier for him, cheaper for you (only one visit and one local to pay for). He probably thought he was doing the right thing.

But I agree - he should perhaps have told you first; afterall 700CHF is not small beer. What would have happened if you'd only budgeted/could only afford the one filling?

I always ask for a written quote before any work is done.

There are no surprises that way.
