Registered Partnership question

Hello English Forum!

This is my first post - but I hope I can make some contributions and not just use the forum to ask for help. I've been lurking for a while now, this forum is brilliant.

So - straight to the point.

I've lived here for 4 years now, with my other half. We've decided to enter into a Registered Partnership. I'm English, he is Swiss. I want to take his surname. If my research is correct, it could be problematic to do so here. I think I have to petition after the partnership?

Since I'm English, would it be easier to just change my name through deedpoll in the UK, before our big day?

I still have a British passport, but I have a Swiss Driver's License now. Could I just send the Partnership Certificate to the passport agency in Britain after the ceremony, and let them change the name from there? Or will there be complications with it being a Swiss certificate?

I'm just not sure what to do about this name change malarky. What are the chances our petition would even be accepted here?

Looks like I've allowed myself to get reasonably confused, which is probably nothing new.

Sorry for my first post being a bit of a cheeky favour-asking one. I would genuinely appreciate any help. I did try the search box as well

Cheers! And thanks for any advice.

Re: Registered Partnership question

From January 1, 2013 will be a new law in force that allows you to choose your new name at the time of your marriage.

Art. 12a will be addend to the current Partnerschaftsgesetz
Quote:

Translation: When you register your partnership you can choose one of your names as the name of both partners.

If you registered your partnership before January 1, 2013 (Date of "Inkrafttreten der Änderung") you my change your name within one year after the law is in force.

New Art. 37a
Quote:
Conclusion, if you marry this year and want to have your partners name right now you need a Deed Poll and new passports before the registration. With the risk that your partner will walk away on your big day.

After January, 1 2013, I assume that the partnership registration documents are enough to request a new passport with your new name. For ease of mind and process you may accomplish it with a Deed Poll. You may also ask the Consular Section of the British Embassy in Berne.
