Ok, noted, I will check.. I still would say, take a higher road in the meantime.

So, where were we..

It might be just me but basically, the main impact is supposed to be "if you get healthy, the Earth will get lighter, please do". But they are using super thin nations to push, those, who have troubles, which is weird. Or it is just me.."you are emaciated as Somalians" or "you are fat as Hawaiians". Still, lamo. I can deal with the ick words like retards/fag but saying "good, you are Somalian size, your Earth thanks you" when people are dying there turns my stomach..I have gone to the World Refugee Org the other day, and nobody wants to be compared weight size to those who have to leave their domiciles...That's why the nation stereotype (often due to tragedies) irks me.

Oks, rant over.
Yep, I agree totally. Can't thank or give rep on the iPad app.

I'd like to see either the standard deviations and/or medians around these numbers to get a sense of the variation. For example, it might be that groups of countries are not significantly different from each other. Some countries are more diverse than others, too. But I was trained as a statistician, and I find these comparisons ...interesting, to say the least.

Absolute nonsense. The impact is "this is how your BMI compares to the rest of the world". No such "please do" in existence.

I guess the report's raison d'etre is based on the rising global obesity problem but there is nothing in this particular report to suggest that people should lose or gain weight. It's purely for comparison.

I'm still having difficulty understanding how you think it weird for the BBC to compare nations on a global BMI report. If you wanted to compare yourself to your relatives or your ancestors, you wouldn't be looking at an international news website to do it, would you?

I think you are reading too much into it if you think the BBC is on a mission to get people to lose weight.

Re: How do you compare size-wise?

If anything I think they would just like to show us, that some countries have plenty/too much and others are lacking......

I'd never heard of Saint Lucia, until my weight averaged the mean distribution there :P

Could be, surely. But for me, it's exactly the line "if everyone had your BMI then.." that reveals the motivation, why ad it there, at all? The family or relatives comment is purely for logic of having a more exact point of relevance or reference. Plus BMI, as simple weight, does not indicate much. Just like an average weight of a national, or an average BMI of a national. So, the Ethiopean relevance to my weight...pweeeese. We don't even eat the same stuff, etc etc.

Tabloid-ish. Fun and inaccurate, I guess. Makes some people think, obviously. I give it a credit for triggering a good debate here, fo sho.

Maybe because it's a comparison, pure and simple?

Where's the motivation? You could argue that the report is urging people to move to the country that best matches their BMI or weight or whatever. Equally ridiculous as telling people to lose weight and lighten the load on the earth but people read whatever they like into these reports.

It's not really a "tabloid" report given the lack of sensationalism. Or has tabloid become more pedestrian and staid since my days in the newsroom..?

Re: How do you compare size-wise?

But.... my BMI is 24 apparently, (although how this can be stated without knowing dense I am is a mystery) which is below average apparently, both nationaly and globaly. To which they comment that if everyone weighed the same as me Earth would still gain weight. Just goes to show how many seriously underweight people there are on this planet.

The stats don't matter at all, that's my point.. So why then speculate about nation's average BMI? And ad by how much Earth weight changes, ridiculous. The whole thing seems pointless, we could be comparing not so popular hair length, feet, etc. Tabloid. And using skinny countries to move fat countries conscience, but that's just my opinion.

Lump, I know about Eritrea (though I try not to ask much), it was more a point to make about the independence not being always respected.

To be fair, you are labouring the point with an awful lot of effort for someone who thinks it's a load of tabloid trash.

Just sayin'

Researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine have calculated average BMI figures for 177 countries.
With this calculator on the BBC website, you can see how you compare with people of the same sex and age group in your and other countries.

Seems that I'm like someone from Sri Lanka and If everyone in the world had the same body fat as me, it would remove 39,601,755 tonnes from the total weight of the world's population

Re: How do you compare size-wise?

When I was a child, very fat and very thin people were very rare. Most of us were 'average/normal' (Whatever that is ..) and few of us ever thought about weight.

Now we seem to be heading for 2 standard weights: the obese and the extremely skinny. Something is very wrong - food has become something else than 'food'

I now know why I always seem to fit in so well when I visit the U.S. Seems my BMI most closely matches their average

Excuse me. Off to the gym.
