Pegnancy

Hi,

I am expecting a baby and it is time to choose where i want to give a birth, but I am a little confused as i don't have complete information. I've been visiting a gynecologist so far, and she gave me a list of midwifes that i can contact myself. She works in a birthhouse, but I think I prefer to give birth in a hospital. I still would like to have a midwife that could help me to prepare for birth, but it seems like midwifes and doctors don't cooperate very well. The midwife I contacted suggested to cancel the next check-up appointment by dr and go to her. I don't think it's appropriate. And what happens when it's time to go to hospital. Who will be with me? If the midwife is with me whole way through will it cost me extra?
The particular midwife would look after me well if I gave birth in her birthhouse, which means extra expenses, some 550 ch for night and weekend services(not sure exactly what for) but I prefer I think to go to hospital. I've been looking for information online but couldn't find the answer, so i would appreciate if someone with more experience in this field would give a clearer picture.
Thank you

I'm also going through this and it's a bit frustrating.

I've been having all of my prenatal appointments in the Baden hospital. A couple of weeks ago I spoke with the midwives and I want a really natural birth, not even an IV when I check in, and she was honest and said I should look elsewhere. If I was to stay there I would deliver with a midwife and the Dr would only come in at the last minute or if there was a bigger problem at hand.

We're now going to consider the hospital in Richterswil as I wouldn't be required to have an IV from the get-go.

My experience thus far is that different hospitals have different policies and you need to shop around to see which one is best for you. We have private insurance so I can basically go anywhere, but my first call would be to your insurance company to confirm your coverage and tell you where you can go. From there do a search here, there are a few very good threads with feedback on various hospitals (I see you're in Luzern, not sure how many AG hospitals are discussed). From there I would make a list and contact the hospitals and make appointments to visit and speak with the midwives, or go on an open night with other pregnant couples.

It seems that the only way to get tried and true answers to your questions are to visit the hospitals and see what they offer.

Oh - and I wouldn't cancel your remaining appointments with your OB, I'd keep going and get a copy of your patient file, or have it sent to your hospital of choice.

Thank you, JanerMacP. I will try to get more information from the insurance company and hospital. Nothing is straight forward here

Re: Pegnancy

There is no rule that you HAVE to consult with a midwife before the birth. If you are not comfortable seeing a midwife instead of a doctor for your monthly check ups, then just continue with your doctor.

If your preference is to go to the hospital don't allow yourself to be bullied into going to a birthhouse. You have to be comfortable and be able to trust your care giver.

If you like the idea of having the support of a midwife alongside your regular doctor visits, perhaps consult one of the other midwives on the list that was given to you. No one says you have to stick with the first consulted midwife (or even doctor).

But Janer is right, even at the hospital your birth would be supervised by the midwives and nurses until you are within a certain time of actually giving birth -- unless, of course, there is something wrong, in which case the doctor would be there earlier.

Re: Pegnancy

Thanks guys, it certainly makes the picture much clearer. It is important for me to know what I am doing instead of guessing.
