Calling all moms

My sister is going to give birth in a few weeks and I'd really like to support her somehow even though I am so far away. Any ideas on something special I could do for her that are actually helpful during that crazy, painful, hormonal, sleepless first month? What did you most need or appreciate (that can be done from a distance?)

Re: Calling all moms

What I appreciated when I was a new mom was food. Maybe a Safeway home delivery (basic groceries and frozen meals) and some dinners delivered from local restaurants?

I also appreciated someone to hold the baby while I was sleeping, and someone to clean my bathrooms, but that is hard to do if you are so far away.

Re: Calling all moms

If you are far away, then physically you can't be there to help, but there are definitely things you can do from afar that will help her!

1) get a housekeeper! the LAST thing you can find time for in the first few weeks is keeping your place clean - so if you can, set it up for her to have a housekeeper come every couple weeks. If you can't afford it on your own, maybe get other family members to help or, if she is somewhere that you know people, get a couple of them to do a freebie clean a couple times until she gets into a routine.

2) little care packages are so fun to receive! you don't mention where she is, but I would look at a local online company that can ship straight to her - doesn't need to be much, but when you are a tad more emotional then usual (!) it is soooo nice to know family is thinking of you even if they can't be with you.

and most of all, just remember to work your schedule around hers for phone or skype calls...and if she misses a time, don't make her stress about it! it might have been the only 30 minutes she could actually sleep

Re: Calling all moms

Before the baby comes you feel overwhelmed about what to buy and what you'll need. I think it would be really helpful to give her a list of things which were useful for you (BTW, I didn't notice if you yourself are a mother) after the baby arrived. I also don't know if your sister has already had something similar to a baby shower. As above mentioned... send her a care package. Maybe a pack of baby onsies size 50/56, some baby socks, a jacket, I found a carrier (er use Ergo and are going to purchase a Manduca for our next one), a Swiss soother is really cute, the bath thermometer was useful and a kit from safety 1st with nail cutters, syryinge, thermometer, etc... Just for a few suggestions which were useful to us. Good luck

Get a gift certificate for a spa near her. It will be nice in a month or 2 if she can get some time to herself!

And I agree with the housekeeper, my friend said that saved her life for the first couple weeks.

I also think that a housekeeper and food delivery is the best gift ever! Going shopping with a little one is such a hassle - I know it, I've had to do it with my little one. And cleaning the place when you could be sleeping...

Re: Calling all moms

I remember the lack of sleep was the hardest part, so some help with either holding the baby or house cleaning/ food delivery to let the mom to catch some sleep will be like godsend-
