Down syndrome screening tests here

What are the standard screening (rathern than diagnostic like amniocentesis or CVS) tests here for Down Syndrome? I have my first doctors appointment for my second baby on Monday & wasn't sure what was normal here as I was already 20 weeks pregnant with my first when we moved here. Is nuchal fold screening common? I'm in Ticino if that makes any difference.

At 13 weeks I had an ultrasound (to measure fluid levels and thickness of the neck) and a blood test. The two results combined make up your "risk factor" of having a baby with DS. If your risk is low, like mine was, there is no further testing. If its high you go for additional testing, and from what I was told by my Dr this is the amniocentesis test (needle in the belly).

Re: Down syndrome screening tests here

Nuchal translucency is done around 11 weeks, if you choose to have it done. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuchal_scan

The general screening test used to be done around 20 weeks, but with my third child they seemed to be moving it up to about 18 weeks.

The combination of blood test plus ultrasound will give you a 'percentage risk' - then you have the option of following up with an amniocentesis or CVS...

Does that answer the question ?

I'd expect it's done as 'routine' unless you choose not to do it...

Thanks for those prompt replies! That's what I hoping to hear as it's similar to the UK.

Re: Down syndrome screening tests here

The Swiss just gave the approval for the new downs syndrom screening by blood test (non-invasive). Apparently it will be availabe in mid-August, and seems to be covered by basic insurance.

Re: Down syndrome screening tests here

Having just had my appointment I can confirm that I'll be having an nuchal fold ultrasound & blood test at my 12 week appointment.

Was quite surprised to both have a cervical smear & a transvaginal scan at my first appointment- great picture of baby though! My doctor has some pretty cool ultrasound equipment in her office which might explain the early ultrasound.

Re: Down syndrome screening tests here

There is a new blood test available since this summer. Unfortunately I don't know the name. Sorry. Your gyne should know though.

....transvaginal scan....
Let's call it what it is....a dildo cam.

And you'll have more of them until 20 weeks or so.
