IVF information / clinics in UK-EU

Hi there,

There is a mirror post asking about treatments in CH. But I would like to ask the British in the forum (and eventually people from other countries) exactly the opposite.

With my wife we have undergone a couple of unsuccessful IVF cycles in Unispital ZH... and we were not overwhelmed by the treatment, nor the care received. We also got the impression -perhaps biased because of the hospital we attended- that the treatment was quite mild and there was no real attempt to move it forward.

So, one of our fears is that in CH the treatments are like that, and we are seriously considering attempting a treatment in the UK or in another European country -easy to reach, advanced (?), perhaps more flexibility with the approaches than here-.

So, the itemised list of questions would be:

1) Does anybody have experience/comparison between other places and there?
2) Are there recommendations of clinics there? -in UK, London area would be great, as it is very easily reachable-
3) How long are the waiting lists? (idea only, I can call, I know )
4) Or any other hint or idea would be really appreciated.

I would be grateful for any kind of information in this respect.

Not sure what you mean about 'mild' or 'moving it forward' with regards to IVF treatment....are you aware that there are other treatments available apart from what you had done ? What did the specialists recommend in your specific situation ?

I did find this website that seemed like it was worth a read:
http://www.ivfineurope.co.uk/clinics-by-country.asp

It lists a total of 12 clinics in Switzerland, and 16 clinics in London...

Re: IVF information / clinics in UK-EU

The OP is right the treatment is 'mild' here and if you are a text book IVF patient then the 'mild' treatment will likely work. However elsewhere, UK other countries have more relaxed rules re freezing embryos. For example in CH an embryo can only be frozen within the first 24 hours whereas in the UK and elsewhere they will let your embryo progress up to 5 days to a blastocyst and the best and strongest will be frozen so you know that your frozen cycle is more worth while. Also here they usually only do a 2 or 3 day transfer whereas elsewhere they will attempt to get your embryo to a 5 day blastocyst which aids implantation when transferred.

That said IVF was successful for me in CH after 3 attempts but I was toying with the idea of going to Istanbul for treatment if my last cycle didn't work as it is not only much cheaper but they are more experimental with their treatment plus I know many people who have been successful in Istanbul. There's also a very good clinic in Athens too.

In London the Lister clinic has a good reputation

Good luck

No experience with this, but I do know two people in this area of CH who specifically went to the US for this treatment as they needed/wanted top notch specialist or treatment and it seemed the US was the place to go. And no they were not US citizens. Both were successful. I have no idea about payments and insurance, but they were both very happy with everything.

Re: IVF information / clinics in UK-EU

Thank you very much for the information. I am processing it, still.

Nickers got exactly my point, what she said perfectly nailed what I meant, so I do not think I need to go further with that...

The hints provided are indeed helpful. I would be interested in knowing a little more precisely what runningdeer said. Do you have more precise information about that? I.e., are there clinics/cities/states I should particularly look at?

Thanks again

We used The Bridge Centre in London and found them excellent. I would add that they are not cheap.

There's a website to help with choosing a clinic in the UK.

Due to the strict rules here, I did not even try here in CH. I can highly recommend IVF CUBE Prague, was 1st time successful there (also a friend of mine). They have very high success rates compared to CH, also all sorts of methods that can be useful for women in their late 30's or older (PGD etc.).

Spain is the new El Dorado for fertility treatments. (it appears, but one has to look for further info)

Re: IVF information / clinics in UK-EU

Reading this article is not really reassuring. I think you have to do some research if you want to find a good clinic there. As I recall I heard good things about Marquès. I had the impression when I was researching forums for clinics that many Spanish clinics are "too big", patients feel like they are in some kind of factory. Egg donation is possible elsewhere, with hopefully less desperate donors, who don't end up cheating, risking themselves and also with so many hormone therapies done I doubt that the egg quality can be any good. Best to do a lot of research and read reviews of patients.

Re: IVF information / clinics in UK-EU

Pretty much what I said in the other thread, but have you looked into CPMA in Lausanne at all?

I was not happy with my regular Ob/Gyn here. I had had one mc already and it was taking us forever to be successful again. I started going to CPMA and things started happening right away, tests, etc. It was a breath of fresh air from the "Eh...wait and see" approach my old doc had.

We haven't done any interventions yet (IUI/IVF) but I am really happy there so far. I feel like they really listen to you and do what YOU want. Know what I mean? Let me know if you have any questions, they have a website in English. When I first wanted to go there, I just emailed them and they emailed me back right away.

Re: IVF information / clinics in UK-EU

In contrast to other posts I felt very confident by the strict Swiss guidelines (similar to Australia). We had ICSI due to a low sperm count. We had success on our fourth round (2 fresh, and 2 fet). The experience was obviously both heartbreaking and heartwarming. We used the services of Gynart in Zurich and I could not recommend them highly enough. We now have a beautiful six month old daughter and we wouldn't change anything.

We have been told that we can have a child only with an egg donation. As it is not possible to do this in Switzerland, we have read a lot about Spain and Greece. Does any one have experience with egg donation and clinics in Greece or Spain?

Why travel so far? It is also possible in the Czech Republic. I can recommend the Cube in Prague. You can look them up. They have many patients from abroad, you will find some threads in English about them.
