About "if the person in business was travelling with other people from work...."; just tell them it is too much of a business risk for everyone to fly in the same plane then catch another one with your partner.
However for a couple to fly on the same plane without their children is a way more serious risk!

The thing I like about business class is it keeps the plebs out of first class.

Cheers,

Hi all,

Sorry, this is more of a rant than anything else, but thought that this may also ring true with some of you here...

Last week we were on a transatlantic flight. Both going and coming back we were sat near families where the father disappeared into business class, leaving his wife and small kids in economy. One of them came back to check on his kids every couple of hours, and each time he left his daughter screamed for the next hour! Mrs Monkey would never allow me to leave her to look after the kids in economy, while I live it up in business class for 10 hours. Is it strange that people would do that?

Today I've seen a story on the BBC website [1] where most of the comments complained about parents taking their kids on plane. But as expats most of us need to fly home with kids to meet the family, not that we just want a nice holiday in the sun. That complaining also wound me up a little.

OK, now that is off my chest I'll be off.
Thanks

I really don't understand this near constant cribbing abt kids from frequent flyers!
Easy to explain: If there were adults screaming uncontrolably for hours in a plane would people probably complain as well. People do in fact equally complain about other annoying guests, I for example once booked on purpose an "economic plus" seat to get a bit more space and ended up next to a guy so morbidly obese that he literally bent the alloy frame of the plane seat and his fat was blocking the entire arm rest and well, far too close for comfort for me.

However, only me was affected from the fat guy while everytime a kid gets out of control some 40 are annoyed - therefore is their impact far greater and therefore the complains more common.

1) some airlines now don't allow little ones in business
Any source for that? I know that Malaysian Airlines does not allow BABIES in FIRST, but that's about it.

Perhaps pick an airline where the planes have a chimney that require regular cleaning.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Fathers flying business class and leaving the family in economy?

I once got offered a business class seat by a man because I was sitting next to his wife and kids in economy and he wanted to join them. So I enjoyed my short-haul in first-class with the appropriate food and beverages and legroom :-)

It does annoy me when people have kids crying and dont try and stop them. Babies, they need feeding, changing, bouncing try the lot. Kids who are old enough to know better need to be told when their behavior is irritating to others and decent parents will do this.
I am happier to have kids near me than adults who drink too much and then throw up.

Re: Fathers flying business class and leaving the family in economy?

My friends were going back to Brazil for vacations and her husband had already the business class seat. Their intention was to him to offer his seat to the person next to his wife so he can sit with his family.

When my friend reached her seat with her small baby, the guy sitting next to her started moaning and bitching about having to sit next to a baby.

That guy became very upset when she started breast feeding finding it "disgusting".

So when hubby came after the takeoff, she told him to stay in his seat because there were no ways she would let that jerk enjoy a business class seat.

Re: Fathers flying business class and leaving the family in economy?

I faced a similar situation.

Since I have travelled extensively for my previous job, I have accumalted tons of miles. Now my wife and me were flying economy for vacation. However from Dubai to Zurich, I was upgraded and she wasnt.

I was given 3 options.

a) Exchange my seat with another guy and give him the free upgrade for 6 hours, while u sit with ur wife, provided u find 2 seats right next to each other. This means another person in economy, who is travelling alone should be willing to change his seat in economy and another lone traveller gets the upgrade. Now, my wife wont allow that, and what if these 2 lone travellers start fighting who gets the upgrade and who changes in economy. So we let that go.

b) I upgrade my wifes seat with the miles I have and she joins me 2.

Now I wanted to do the same, however, my wife had a point. As we didnt use the loungue in Dubai and just sat on the seat for 4 hours. We are not gonna get full out of losing the 45000 miles to upgrade her seat.

c) My wife sits in the business class while I cramp it up in the economy.

I guess at times like these ( and I am being cheesy) you realize how much u feel for ur better half. we polietly argued who gets to sit in business, each of us forcing the other to sit. I am stronger than her :P so i ran to the economy and told her 'honey, either we create a ruckus or u just sit in business'.

BTW, did I mention business class had only THREE seats occupied out of 25 while, economy was jam packed. We did tell them, we wont eat ur business class food :P neither do we want economy food, but just be next to each other. They said NO. However, after 2 hours, she came to me and said, lets go, I fixed it. After i followed her, we both were on the same seat for 4 hours, agreed it was a lil more cramped than economy but we slept like rocks.

Now that I read it... Its way too cheesy. Should I just delete this :P

This family opted to put parents in business class and pay the kiddos for flying economy. Now maybe it's just me, but if you can afford 11 family trips per year for two decades, you are not as middle class as you say you are. Who has that much money, or time??

I'd send the kids via FedEx, their MD-11s have a fantastic open area on roller bearings, all the way from the cockpit door back to the rear bulkhead.

Re: Fathers flying business class and leaving the family in economy?

Sorry but I find the line " if you don't want to sit next to children on the plane, fly private" to be pretty retarded. Children are a huge imposition. A long flight is difficult as it is. Just makes my blood boil when parents are miserable and think everyone else has to put up with their crying offspring like they do.

I think that children should fly in a special compartment and in crates ( like pets).
