ug. poor thing, i think that is every expat (or whatevers) worst nightmare... my heart goes out to you.
When you leave your country/familly to work elsewhere this is one of the downsides and if you feel it really is that important to you, then you need to make a provision for it. Save up a rainy day fund which is sufficient to get you where you want to go, and back again WHEN you want, and remember, last minute air fares are not so cheap as planned trips.

Re: Horrible choice (travel for family)

Thank you for the advice everyone, it has helped me put my thoughts in order quite a bit. Now waiting for siblings to let me know what THEY think they'd like to do, so I can plan around them.

This is definitely one of the times that being from a family where those who are into settling in one spot settled in different spots, and those who didn't are scattered to the winds causes logistical problems. Thankfully we're in two main groups these days - with me being the only offshoot satellite far away from everyone else.

Smoky - yes, he is my mother's father. He's smoked for a long time, pipes and cigars. He's 89 and has a lot of health issues, but definitely is of the "keep on keeping on" personality type - I guess we'd become a bit used to Grandpa getting sick but the doctors making him better, and him having the strength to carry on. This time though, he had a nagging cough for a little while, and finally had it checked (how many of us with what we think are chest colds never have it checked out) to find out that it was cancer.

Just the other day I was walking behind an older gentleman, with similar look to my Grandpa, who was smoking a cigar. The smell of Basel and surrounds is already very similar to the area of Oregon where my grandparents live, so getting the whiff of cigar mixed in, really reminded me of him. <3

Re: Horrible choice (travel for family)

I guess my Grandfather kept it a secret how bad things were. I'm so deeply sad, and also angry at fate. I finally got my siblings talking to each other this past week, and we were beginning to make plans to make a "happy" visit, but unfortunately it became too late.

Friday night I received a phone call from my sister, telling me that my Grandfather had passed in his sleep Thursday night after saying prayers and sharing a final kiss good night with my Grandmother.

So, if anyone can tell me what sorts of information is needed to give to airlines for making that flight to Oregon for the funeral, I'd appreciate it.

Also, if anyone has tips on making it a three stop flight kinda - to go from here to Oregon (somehow) to get to the funeral, then on the way back, to stop for an extended period in Florida so I can spend time with my Mother and the rest of my family - it suddenly feels so vital to see them and spend some good time with them, and I do not want to have the lasting thing for a while be seeing them at the funeral.

Thank you very much.

I feel for you too.
Sorry I cannot help with the airline stuff. I only know that a guy to whom I explained why I once needed a flight so urgently was very, very helpful. May you have the same support from those people and offices you have to deal with.

Roundtrip-Flights are notoriously expensive, though - esp. from Switzerland
I'd also consider Stuttgart as starting-point.

Re: Horrible choice (travel for family)

Dear Peg, I want to tell once again how sorry I am for your loss. I can imagine how you feel not having had the time to see him before.

All my wishes are with you and your family. I can't help you with the flight issue but I want you to know I am thinking of you,

Nil

Sorry for your loss,

https://www.united.com/web/en-US/app...chResult1.aspx

You can do multi leg trips with United and probably other American carriers. Given that you are flying one domestic leg I would think they are your best options but I could be wrong. Ive picked the dates at random, and taken liberties with the airports but you can try this or other airlines and then you could call to see if there is any flexibility given the circumstances.

Otherwise look at return tickets Switzerland to Florida and from Florida to Oregon round trip would be my other suggestion.

I hope it works out.

Peg,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I am in a similar position with my normally fit grandfather recently falling ill, so I can understand how you must be feeling.

I wanted to add that United offers a 5% discount for bereavement fares. I know it's not much, but in case you don't find something better at least it's an option.

Re: Horrible choice (travel for family)

Hi Peg,
My heart goes out to you and hope you can make the necessary flight arrangements. I used to work in the fares department of a US airline and do recall such a thing as bereavement fares. It was a long time ago so not sure if these still exist but worth checking with the airline. From memory the passenger did have to produce some kind of proof that they were indeed traveling for a bereavement e.g. death certificate but again check with the airline (believe it or not some people would make up bereavement stories in an effort to get lower fares)

If such fares are not available then explore different ways of booking your ticket. Return tickets with a stopover can work out expensive as airfares with stopovers are usually higher than fares that merely involve transfers in cities of less than 24 hours. Sometimes booking seperate tickets can work out cheaper than booking everything on the one ticket. Explore booking a return ticket e.g. outbound Zurich to Portland (?) and returning Miami (?) to Zurich (this kind of ticket is called an open jaw as your returning from a different city that you flew into). Then look at trying to find the cheapest one way ticket from Oregon to Florida. I hope this helps and wish you all the best in the coming weeks.

Re: Horrible choice (travel for family)

Peg, I just saw this thread and your sad news, and just want to say I am sorry to hear about your grandfather.
My dad is 80 and has recently started to get a little confused. It has made me think more and more that my parents are not going to be around forever, maybe only a few more years, which makes me sad.
I am thinking of you, I hope you manage to spend some precious time with your family.
