Gynecologist

Hi everyone,

I have three questions and it will be great if someone can help with that. Do I need a letter from my GP to go to the gynecologist? Being aware of the absurd prices in Switzerland, is it ok to ask the GP secretary how much will cost the visit before making an appointment as I didn't reach my franchise yet. Do they have a maximum fee fixed by the government they can't exceed? Thanks a lot!

Hiya

You pick any Frauenarzt you want, problem is - its difficult to find one, noone wants new clients. Mine costs 230 each time with all the test included.
Not sure if there is any limit.

I hear this a lot, and while it's true that some doctors are at capacity many are not. It's not hard to find a doctor (frauenarzt, kinderarzt or whatever) you just might need to make 2 or 3 calls until you find one. Get a list from the local hospital or from www.doktor.ch, don't just rely on individual doctor's websites as they are naturally the ones that get the most calls.

230 CHF? OMG, I need to take a mortgage. Is it always so expensive? I need a check up with ultrasound.

Re: Gynecologist

Hi,
I was referred in August, my doctor charged me 280 chf for the referral and it was 286.00 chf for the actual appointment. Really expensive appt and nothing resolved really.

You should be able to claim the cost back from your insurance, some bills go straight to the insurance company and others you pay up front but you can claim bills back minus the 10% you have to pay.

I thought basic insurance covered the cost of an annual gynecological exam (the second examination after one year, after that one examination every 3 years)? Or is it subject to the deductible?

In the neighborhood of 200 sounds about right for a routine exam and ultrasound. If non-routine examination is needed it might run higher. I recently had one done that required additional screening and the cost was ca. CHF 400.

As to the avialability of doctors - really depends on where you live and whether you are able to go out of canton with your insurance.

Here in my corner of SZ a rather long wait for an appointment for a routine exam is the norm - the practice I go to asks you to book next year's appointment when you are there for your currrent exam.

It is indeed difficult to find a doctor taking new patients here. For those who are open to new patients, expect a 2-6 month wait before you can get an appointment for a routine exam.

But 20 minutes down the road in canton ZH one is spoiled for choice of doctors. So if your insurance allows you to go out of canton, perhaps this might be a better route.

But if this isn't routine, if there is suspicion of something wrong, you can generally get in very quickly with a referral from your GP.

I was told by my insurer (Assura under "médecin de famille" model which means you should always see your GP first) that I could just go to the gynecologist, no referral, be it for check ups or pregnancy matters. They said gynecologist and ophtalmologist were the 2 only specialised doctors I could see without first heading to my GP (and emergenccies too).

For my gynecologist, I just got a recommended name from a friend, made an appointment and went. Simple.

Great, I hate paying an unecessary visit to the GP.

Re: Gynecologist

I see my gyn 4 times a year, and my exams run between 100 and 300 on average. Usually with some ultrasound.

You really think CHF 230 is a lot to pay for a yearly exam? Compared to the US it's about the same.

Perhaps you went to the same schools as many American Republicans, but women see gynecologists for more than issues of pregnancy!!

You betcha! In fact my gyn did my breast surgery and I see her for a surgical follow up, as well as gyn exam. She's excellent and worth the CHF 200 or so I pay for a visit. In fact, she just called me today (her office is closed) to tell me that a test I had turned out negative. Yay.

I didn't need to have a letter from my GP but he recommended me one.
Otherwise you can still go to the ETH at the frauenklinik http://www.gynaekologie.usz.ch/Ueber...n/default.aspx
