Where can I get tested for ADHD?

After watching this video yesterday, a lot of things all of a sudden make sense

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyDliT0GZpE

I'm quite sure I have it, but I'd like to get a professional diagnosis. I don't have a family doctor. Does anyone know where I can start?

By the way, for anyone who knows someone with ADD or ADHD the linked video is an excellent explanation of what it is and why it sucks.

Re: Where can I get tested for ADHD?

Discussed recently

To answer your question, talk to your family doctor first of all, and get a referral.

edited -- er sorry, didn;t see your line about not having a family doctor. I was off on a bizarre train of thought....

Re: Where can I get tested for ADHD?

By getting a family doctor I should think. It's more than likely you'd need a referral from him/her to any specialist; if you do it yourself it can take much longer to get appointments. A doctor will do a thorough check to make sure there's no other underlying problems with your health.

Re: Where can I get tested for ADHD?

got through 1 minute of the video.......
you need to see a shrink I believe. They will make you do several questionaires/test and decide whether or not you have it. In Europe in general it is much less accepted as an issue than the USA

Be careful about getting a diagnosis. Often the automatic recommendation is drugs which may not be necessary. Also if attention is the problem then it can also be due to lack of sleep, allergies, type of food consumed. >True ADHD is characterized by a type of brain frequenzy

A type of brain frequency? Sounds very scientific...

There is no diagnostic test for ADHD requiring the use of EEGs. EEGs are really not at the point where they can be used for diagnostic purposes because EEGs are relative in people. You would need a baseline to determine if you're improving symptoms over time or not. If you're a programmer or electronics whiz, you can always build your own eeg system with instructions from the OpenEEG project and use it to lower the amplitude of certain groups of frequencies.

There are a few drugs prescribed in Switzerland for ADHD, most are off-label. There's Strattera (which seems to have bad feedback from users), Methylphenidate, Wellbutrin and Effexor. Only the first two have been approved for ADHD (ADS in German). I'm not convinced the drugs do anything but increase the problem in the long-run, the studies are not convincing to me. A lot of SSRIs are prescribed for ADHD and they don't help, they just reduce how much people care about their symptoms.

If you just want to improve your symptoms, have a look for the link between endocannabinoids and ADHD and how exercise maximizing anandamide production can help.

If a diagnosis would be helpful to you, then there are places to have it done. The cost is about chf 2500, and unless you're a kid insurance won't pay.

Medication can be helpful for some people, it is for me, but it's not a path for everyone. I think you need to understand how your mind works - that's what i got from testing - an understanding of how i process information and why some tasks are easier than others. I also had a life long issue with anxiety, related to how i process information.

Just as some people think medication is the answer for everything, others think it is appropriate for no one. I 'm in the middle. It does help some people enormously, but not all. And like everything, you can't take it blindly. And you have to either learn new habits or learn to accept the way you are - a little of both.

If you think testing will help you understand yourself, and if you're prepared to pay for it, then it might be useful. It's unfortunate that add/adhd is framed as a dissability - but that comes from the Us, maybe Uk where it's the only way for kids with different educational needs to be addressed, not always very well, either.

I think the site elpos.ch provides links to some resources, in German.

At any rate, it's useful to have a family doctor.

No, I'm sorry, I'm reading the paper, and I'm not convinced on a few fronts. If this paper is from 1996 and they're using QEEG to see if they can distinguish those with ADHD from "Normals" and to recognize responders to dextroamphetamine and methylphenidate, then why isn't this tool used in the field yet? Something doesn't smell right. And quite frankly, I have to point out that they used the EEG to see if the ADHD kids could be recognised because they had been tested for ADHD in a clinical stetting beforehand. As early as 2009, it was still considered a promising "diagnostic aid" not a replacement and still "promising" for the future.

Also, most of the neurofeedback programs I've read about use only a couple of channels and this paper mentions at least 21 points and I'm guessing 17 channels from my understanding. As far as I know, nobody's doing this with that many channels outside research... or possibly private non-insured clinics that are-- quite frankly, probably a bit suspect.

I am not going to try to convince as you are one who has already made up your mind.

I just quickly pulled something off of the web. If you go to the web you will see all kinds of material.

You are correct in that they are not using is a diagnostic tool. To do a diagnosis it takes more of course but it is very helpful in the diagnosis.

Actually I have such a product please see below.

Don't get too distracted by what is written on the net. And Swiss psychiatrists, like most other psychiatrists, will make a psychiatric diagnosis according to the DSM IV criteria. No EEG there at all for making the diagnosis of ADHD. Read here: http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/diagnosis.html

Also, don't let any psychologist fool you he can make the diagnosis ADHD unless he can quote the DSM IV criteria by heart. There are some bad psychologists out there trying to make a quick buck out of a completely normal but stressed out boy. And there are quite some good psychologists out there who know their stuff.

Oh, and the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist is that the first went to med school.

My goodness there is nothing wrong with you. I do not know anyone who does not have sort of issue to deal with in their lives. You do not have a disease.

In my opinion I do not like the ADHD label. Attention deficit DISORDER. You are not disordered, you are different. If you start doing some research you will find that people who are supposedly ADHD have made great contributions to this world. Do not change who you are but rather learn how to survive in a world that demands conformity.

Re: Where can I get tested for ADHD?

Below is a link to a video of an author being interviewed about his book Anatomy of an Epidemic.

He discusses the connection between the psychiatry, and the Pharma and their development of the DMSIV

The link below is a vidoe by Dr. Pa, Popper. discussing ADHD

I do neurofeedback training which is an alternative to medication. In my opinion, I do not change people but help them to learn how to cope survive etc.

There is a tremendous amount of information now on the web.

I am not anti medication.

Re: Where can I get tested for ADHD?

Wow! For some reason I didn't receive any notifications and had no idea there had been so many replies!

Well, in the meantime I did get a diagnosis through the Universitäre Psychiatrische Dienste Bern. My third and final appointment is on the 2nd.

Thank you all very much for your input and suggestions. I will have a read/look through the material mentioned by everyone, and to be sure I am not jumping on any sort of drug treatment wagon. I just kind of wanted to have confirmation, so that I can make some decisions around that.

Thanks again!
