There's a similar service to the Permanance in Sihl City, although it's not 24/7. The clinic is on the 3rd floor, left-hand side when you come up. I've been there a couple of times, so has hubby, and we were both extremely pleasantly surprised by the service.

I have just been to that clinic for the first time today; make sure you call them and book an appointment before hand though. But I went in the morning and I managed to have an apointment the same day in the afternoon and I was actually seen at the exact time of my appointment, which makes for a refreshing change compared to the waiting time at my GP in the UK (even when I have an appointment). Also it was not that expensive for the consultation I only paid CHF23, which is no bad at all.

Re: Drop-in clinic at Zurich HB

I was sick as a dog two weeks back over the weekend and didnt realise that there was a doctor opened in Zurich, on a SUNDAY evening till my husband found this thread on the EF - so thanks, DB. Couldnt find the thanks option on this thread.

It was an hour's wait and everyone spoke good English. They even had blood testing and Xray facilities onsite. The doctor ordered both tests for me, totally unsympathetic that I was about to faint because I hate needles

Got my results back in minutes and I was very impressed at how thorough they were - I guess they are on high alert for the swine flu. The clinic is also connected to the huge apotheke in the train station, where you can get your prescription after. The apotheke closes at midnight. Very handy.

Didnt pay a single cent. They just asked for my health insurance card and said not to worry - they will bill it all to the insurance company.

Just beware: The health insurance company might simply pass on the entire bill to you, as they did to me, because the drop-in centre isn't on their list.

It's still an excellent service, though, even if you do have to pay.

Re: Drop-in clinic at Zurich HB

This might be veering off-topic so apologies in advance....but this thread has reminded me that I haven't actually registered with a GP yet, after several years here. It's always been on the to-do list, but I've been very lucky that I've never been sick enough to need a doctor yet, so it's always been pushed back.

So, the basic question, which I'm a bit embarassed to even ask, is - how does one register with a GP here? I'm assuming there are two steps:

1. Find out from your insurance which local GPs they cover
2. Ring up, explain you're not yet on their books and would like to register.

That sounds deceptively simple to me, but is that all there is to it? And do the insurance companies publish some kind of list of which GP's they'll cover?

... wait until you're sick and they can't turn you away, register and book an emergency appointment, and you're in!

I'm only being half facetious here: Doctors in Switzerland appear to be like solicitors or lawyers in the Anglo-Saxon world - you don't have to have a registered one as such, you just go to one when you're sick, then tend to return to the same one from then on for convenience - although you are under no obligation to do so.

Anecdotally, the approach I suggested above does seem to be the best one. Friends and acquaintances who have tried to register with a doctor while still well have been told there's no room, whereas I've never heard of anyone who is actually sick being turned away from a doctor's surgery. I stress, again, that this is merely anecdotal, based on my experiences and those of people I know.

But I'd be happy to be corrected on this point.

Re: Drop-in clinic at Zurich HB

So speaking of a general practitioner, I was wondering if anyone knew of a good one in zurich that also speaks English? I had surgery on Thursday and the hospital wanted me to see someone today to make sure everything's going ok. I'm not sure this is necessarily a job for the drop-in clinic in the HB. BUT I have also heard from friends that they've done an excellent job in the past.

Oh and FYI, if you do not have Swiss insurance, they require you to put down a substantial deposit before having surgery, even if your insurance company gives you a guarantee of payment.

I reccomend you check with your medical insurance team if Permanance is on their list else your Permanance bill might not be taken care by them.
It happened to a friend of mine and his Health insurance was from MEDICLAIM.
but then again this proberbly varies from one Insurance policy to the other
Does your friend have a discoutned insurance policy where he's restricted to a list of providers?

If I have a general (standard) basic insurance coverage where I am free to see any doctors, will service received by Permanance be for sure covered under the health insurance? Or am I missing something?

Good point! I was wondering the exact same too. I have what you have, a standard basic insurance, with the option to see whoever doctor I want. My assumption has always been that the Krankenkasse covers any legally listed and registered doctor I may pick.

Re: Drop-in clinic at Zurich HB

Some health insurance plans are cheaper if you agree to only use doctors on their list... its the "Hausarzt Modell" or GP model.. Never signed on to it as personally, if I have to pay for medical insurance then I want to choose who I see...

A further condition for insurance reimbursement is that the obtained medical services and medicaments are on the approved list. For example, various cosmetic and "lifestyle" enhancements, vitamins, etc are not reimbursed.

Re: Drop-in clinic at Zurich HB

Just got back from first visit to the clinic. The service was outstanding. Just over 3 hours from sign-in to back home. Thanks to DB for creating the thread and letting me know about it.

It's a real lifesaver, isn't it?

Are there similar clinics in Basel, Bern and elsewhere?

Basically, just one heck of alot more efficient. That would be a 12-14 hour ordeal on a Sunday visit to the emergency room in Toronto.

Re: Drop-in clinic at Zurich HB

Mm, yes thanks to DB and Englishforum in general for late night Zürich doctor searches. I went in this morning and was #13 (they were already on #10). I got in and out in about an hour and a half, with a nice blood report, rapid strep test, and a load of drugs from the pharmacy next door. All in all, it was very convenient.

Now I just have to see how much my insurance is going to make me pay for all of it.

Even if the first post is old, it's stil very useful, thanks for that!
I would also like to add another link for the dentist clinic in the Zurich central train station http://www.swiss-smile.com/en/home/

We used their services few times (emergency cases when the family members were visiting) and it was really very good.

Re: Drop-in clinic at Zurich HB

I made bad experience with Permanence HB and would not reccomend them.
Recently I was treated in an inpatient, very superfitial, nervy and rude manner by a Permanence doctor. I wrote a mail about it to the administration and the management of Permanence and never received any reply.
In Permanence I felt unwelcome and like an item on a factory belt.

Afterwards I switched to Arzthaus, which is also central and has similar concept of being open until late 7 days a week, with a possibility of walk-in. So far so good.
